Hello everyone,
This board has popped up at an ideal time – I’m just starting to get serious about trying the tube challenge – and I notice that a chap called Geoff has even gotten involved (from my rudimentary Google searches you seem to come up a lot!)
I’m putting together an excel file with which to analyse data and routings, and it occurred to me just to check that the 270 stations I have listed are actually correct before going any further with...and it turns out I’m not so sure!
I found one other source on the web, and have a few discrepancies – I wonder if some of the forum members could tie up a few doubts for me?
1. Is 270 (including Blackfriars) the current correct number? 2. I have Wood Lane and Canning Town on my list (the other one didn’t). These are correct, right? 3. The other list had Surrey Quays and Wapping (I don’t). These seem to just be random overland stations to me – safely ignored? 4. Station that are more than one station are: Hammersmith, Paddington, and Edgware Road – correct? (Also, I’m a little unclear on the exact requirements regarding Paddington if someone would have the time elaborate on that...)
If anyone wants the excel file for their own use (it even includes longitude and latitude!) just let me know and I’m happy to share it.
Cheers, Marc

These are both tube stations, one recently opened on the H&C line, and the other on the Jubliee extension since it opened in the millennium. 3. Both are on the East London line, which was formerly a London Underground line. 4. Hammersmith - two stations H&C and Pic/Dis Paddington - two stations, Bakerloo/District/Circle at Praed St (opposite side of the road from the main concourse) and, H&C/Circle at Bishop's Bridge Road, which is towards the far end of the suburban national rail platforms (follow the pink line on the floor of the station to get from one to another) Edgware Road - two stations, Bakerloo and the sub-surface lines. All stations must be visited on a stopping train, except for Blackfriars, where a pass-through is allowed for obvious reasons.

Hi Edgemaster, thanks for the notes, that clears things up a lot. I guess the online list I found was quite old, hence the discrepancies...
I'm targeting an October attempt, during the school half-term, with the expectation that there might be slightly fewer people in the system at that time. (I think summer would have been better, but I just won't be ready in time)

Heh, don't count on it, my experience is that during holiday periods its usually busier throughout the day rather than just the peaks... The usual trick is, if possible, to time the Zone 1 interchanges so you don't hit the peaks.

Ah, I see. I haven't done a lot of work on routing yet, just data gathering really to later crunch through some algorithms. I imagined I'd be in the centre at numerous times, certainly including the peaks, thus better to go for overall more busy but easier peaks. But if it is possible to avoid zone 1 during peak times, then yeah, doing it during a holiday period isn't going to help much. Thanks for the heads up - the voice of experience has spoken!

I'd never read about the pro's and con's of the tube challenge, but had always presumed you had to cover all routes in normal daily service as opposed to stations!
Does such a challenge exist? Doesn't seem right to me that as a railway system you aren't transversing all the track, ie NO W&C! I had always presumed such a challenge would start and finish in the Ricky (and/or north of) area in order to get Watford NC sorted out as the most elusive bit of track!
and I'm not entering the realms of crossovers/rusty rail moves btw, just daily routes in passengar service!
