Slightly OT: Do they really pronounce it Bom-bar-dee-ay, and do you go along with this nonsense?

Yup, it's pronounced like that. It's a Canadian (french) company that took over Adtranz, who took over ABB who originally purchased BREL in 1989.

Do you work for Bombardier or something? I would love to have a first hand look at how trains are built!

No mate, I am LU all the way! ;)

I work in upgrades (after a reasonably lengthy life in operations) and am responsible for ensuring that the design meets end user requirements.

As promised, an update on 'S' Stock production:

The first driving motor car (21001) is fully constructed and on it's bogies. The doors are fitted and the cab has all of it's control panels/switches etc. In addition the drivers temporary desk and the instructors desk are in place, but the cab still requires some fit out (panels/facias etc). The saloon has very little fitted at the moment apart from the flooring, and it is still awaiting seats.

There are a another two cars constructed (which I was able to walk around) but without doors/bogies etc, and further two cars in a less advanced state with looms being fitted.

The driving motor car is due to go into the lab for testing in around a weeks time and the program in general is approximately 3 weeks behind schedule following the first driving motor car (21002) suffering an accident.

This brings you guys up to speed with the current state of the 'S' Stock. I know you are eagerly awaiting images, I haven't forgotten you, but this will take a little while longer yet (due to politics etc).

In case anyone sees May Modern Railways there's a short section on page 6 with out of date info about S stock. It's wrong and production is full steam (well, electricity) ahead!

Cool to see the S stock coming! I'm not very fond about the 67 stock being replaced, although I still like 2009 stock, but the S stock looks great!

Just to update you all, again! There are now all eight cars of train 1 in production and two cars of train 2 also in the early stages of construction.

Modern Railways report (June issue) that the plan to lengthen the new 6-car trains on the H & C to 7-cars will be shelved until after the 2012 Olympics. They also suggest that S6s will be built before the Metropolitan stock. This means that the A Stock will continue to run after the C Stock has been replaced. It also says that the new Metropolitan stock will be delivered as 7-car trains, “with a car added later after infrastructure improvements”. Mmmm. That will put some cats amongst the pigeons north of Wembley Park.

prjb - over to you.

As I previously posted I thought the S7 project on the Circle & Hammersmith was a stupid idea due to the trains not fitting in most platforms and sidings on the line. Now hopefully someone has seen sense and shelved the idea.

What about the Circle?

I hope that happens, but I think that the Met. will get their S stock first.

What infrastructure improvements. Met. platforms are long enough. If this was true, why would S stock train 1 be 8 car?

I don't like the S stock design, the window in the end door is too low, and couldn't they put the grey across the door? (And also on the 09TS).

The Circle and H&C are one line in timetabling, crewing and trains. So any decision regarding the H&C also applies to the Circle.

The Circle/Hammersmith & City needs the trains more than the Met. With the signalling delayed the Met doesn't want fewer seats in the short/med term!

That's what I thought, but couldn't the Circle be run as part of the District? It wasn't always run with the H&C.

It could be, but the District would need more drivers, all drivers would need road training on the north side of the Circle and the H&C to Hammersmith as most trains end up at Hammersmith Depot, all drivers would need C stock training (currently, East end drivers don't work C stock). All this costs money.

It is best that the H&C and Circle stay combined!
