Abyone see the Article in todays substandard regarding the Northern line (Here's a Tube train... but where is the driver?)?

After my initial, WTH! and since when has the northern line had ATO?

I got to thinking how is what is displayed in the phtographs possible? I thought to run a train you needed to have some efffect over the Deadman at all times. Some of the photos seem to show a rather difficult deadman holding position.

Though i did have one thought, they didnt take a picture of the rear cab with someone in it did they?

It seems strange that the photographer (who isn't a journalist), was taking pictures in the same location for 4 hours! Seems like someone trying to find a story, and selling it to a paper for a bit of money?

I walked down to Tower Hill station from Fenchurch Street, on my way into work and see all the substandard signs emblazoned with "train with no driver - see amazing pictures". As it was only 20p today I thought sod it i'll buy a copy rather than wait and find one later. Get's about three pages in to see three pictures - all with drivers in the cab. So they're false advertising then. Of course anyone else doing that would have a story written about them. The pictures show a driver drinking a tea/coffee, a driver reading something and, admittedly a little concerning, a driver with a very young child in the cab. Any of these activities could quite easily occur at any platform. Considering how clear the pictures are, i'm astounded that the trains are actually moving - especially at the claimed 35mph. 'The paper that never gets it wrong' also claims that the deadman can be momentarily released with no effect. Really?

The substandard obviously didn't have a decent story to print today, so they went with this rubbish. Personally I hope someone takes them to task on the crap they have printed today - it's just a pity the public are gulible enough to accept what has been missprinted today as the truth, when it actually isn't.

The only use the Standard has is to clean the cab windows.

In 4 hours I'm surprised they only got one picture of a driver drinking tea! Honestly, what's supposed to be the harm in that?

I usually have a little picnic arranged on the paddle! I have a bottle of pop wedged down the side, a sarnie and a packet of crisps on the 'coffee table'...

As I was discussing with Colin earlier in the canteen, the Evening Standard love to scare the public, especially with bullshit stories about tube drivers!
Hopefully the driver pictured with his mug of tea will sue the Standard for every penny for invading his privacy and making out that he was doing something wrong when he was only doing what most drivers do all the time!

I very much doubt that the trains were travelling at anywhere near to 35mph! those pics are clear, and not blurred at all! The trains were probably waiting at a red signal!

I'd write a stinking letter to the editor, but he'd never print it! I'm sure this is an infringement of our human rights, to have our photograph taken and published without our consent. Hopefully ASLEF/RMT reps will be launching their own complaints against the paper.

However the one good (for the want of a better word) thing to come out of this is that we'll all be extra vigilant of people taking our photographs in future.

Them photo's certainly looked fishy to me. We obviously all drink tea, but the gentleman checking his duty book didn't look like his hand was on the CTBC. I'm wondering if these people were sitting at the home signal and stationary. I've not been to HBT for nigh on 7 years so cant remember where the footbridges are. Might have to peruse the DEV later to confirm.

As a side, I always thought the HBT branch was a 40mph (or was it 45 ???) line. We used to hack it down to totteridge on the 59's. ;)

Are these pics online?

Rather strange that they got away with taking photos of trains - I thought you were a terrorist if you did that? Or are the ES a different case?

There are 2 brick overbridges upon leaving totteridge but are nearer Totteridge than HBT. Just gone through an old Line suppliment and the line speed is 45mph like I first thought. At that sort of speed, those pictures are far too clear to be real. The clarity in the blind display would mean that bloke has really good kit or he's talking out of his rear orifice.

Last theory, is that he's taken them from the footbridge at HBT platform, but considering the bloke reading his duty book, doesn't have his nose against the windscreen it's unlikely.

I think the Sub standard has dented my Professional pride a bit.

Bullshit!

As for the pictures, if they were "genuine", which i doubt, what is wrong with drinking a cup of tea / coffee whilst driving along? Most new stock has a cup holder as part of the cab design.

Looking down at the duty book, well, shouldnt really be doing that, likewise with the bag.

The subject of the child in the cab, the picture actually shows the child standing at the entrance to the cab, with he J door open. Who knows, they could have opened the door due to an emergency? The child could have knocked on the door, with the train op opening it to make sure there wasnt a problem.

Also this stretch of line is very straight, and you can see quite a way down the line, inlcuding quite a few signsls ahead of the section you are currently in.

I think the problem is, is that substandard have too much time on their hands, and havnt got any facts for a "proper" story.

Im sure they wouldnt like it if LUL banned sale of the newspaper in a lot of the Zone 1 stations, would they? ;)
