I think the reason why the S Stock announces the next station as well as the destination is because on the Met Line it is useful to know what the next station is - especially if it's a fast train... However, I don't think there is any problem with "Main Line Intercity and Suburban Rail Services" compared to "National Rail", both are better than listing every train company that serves a station, Is there a reason why National Rail was chosen instead of this? 09TS and S stock announce the next station as well as the destination primarily because the LU Standards demanded it at the time of their design and even more so, RVAR legislation demands it. Certainly helps on Met services though! Earlier LU fleets weren't Regulated under RVAR and LU didn't have quite the same requirement set either. Perhaps RVAR 2020 deadline will bring changes to those trains. National Rail Services was used to give a more standardised and shorter interchange announcement that would survive as TOCs' names keep changing. TfL Rail and London Overground are having an influence though - more to come?

Who knows what with the Cable car and the Overground etc - they might start including airlines at Heathrow next, "change here for national and international air services..."

As I understand it, some or all RVAR regs are supposed to be met on existing trains by 2020.

The latter was the set of pre-recorded announcements heard on stations from 1989 onwards, utilising a male voice. Most commonly heard as the Inspector Sands and Evac messages on stations - it's possible a few stations retain this on their fire panels. There was a library of other messages, although the technology and message library was fairly basic and inflexible. Some of these announcements sounded pleasingly old-fashioned, such as "we are holding passengers in the booking hall as the platforms are rather crowded, please bear with us". Interesting, thanks. I heard a rather old-school Inspector Sands announcement the other day, but I forget which station - no doubt the voice you're referring to. The Link doesn't work Apologies, I've edited my post to include the updated link:

Why no "change for the Piccadilly line"?

With regards to the 95 stock I've just remembered that it will need to be updated in time for the Battersea Extension, so maybe some improvements can be made then.

^ Sounds like Celia with a cold. Why no "change for the Piccadilly line"? I know, it's really irritating me! If I remember correctly, the 09 stock are like this as well. I think this was discussed a while back on here, with the conclusion being that it is somewhat more grammatically correct to omit the 'the' in the case of stations such as Euston where you can "change for Northern line, London Overground and National Rail services" - the 'services' belonging to all three options... remove two of them and "change for Northern line services" would still be acceptable. At Warren Street, they do use a 'the' ("change for the Northern line") as it is the only option and it isn't necessary to include the word 'services' after an Underground line if they can get away with it. However, the Northern line example we're discussing above isn't anything to do with grammar, as clearly Leicester Square only has one interchange option i.e. the Piccadilly line. The omission of the 'the' goes back to the limited memory capacity on '95 stock and the way the system is configured in general.

The station announcements sometimes start with an automated voice of a lady saying "Customer service update..." and then informing customers about how the service is performing. It always reminds me of that lady from the film, Office Space, "Corporate Accounts Payable, Nina speaking! Just a moment!"

Sorry, time I rode on the Vic line again it seems! Assuming the Vic doesn't announce the next station whilst at the platform, they must be using the RVAR exclusion allowed for stations closer together than 5 minutes. SSR couldn't consistently do that because of some of the Met line non-stop runs and run times like Chalfont to Chesham.

The Victoria line trains do announce the next station while at a station, though not all the time.

Piccadilly line trains also announce the next station at Hammersmith westbound and Acton Town eastbound, presumably because of the 5 minute RAVR exclusion

This evening, I noticed onboard an S stock train that the original Phil Sayer "please mind the gap between the train and the platform" message seemed to be playing rather than the newer one - odd, as I thought all of these had been phased out!
Another anomaly I've come to notice on the Class 378 LO trains has been the "This is car number 1 of 5" messages are voiced by Julie Berry, even though I know that Elinor Hamilton has recorded such messages - which begs the question, why go for Julie Berry?
Progress on the Northern line CIS update has been slow to say the least. I've so far only travelled on two trains with the upgraded announcements... I wonder why it's taking so long to roll out?

I noticed today that the 95 stock with the new announcements also have a new announcement when going around the Kennington Loop, which I hadn't seen before:

Shouldn't that now read "Customer Alarm"??

...and, more to the point, "Train Operator"?
I notice that the CIS upgrade on the Northern line has been incredibly slow to roll out. Does anyone know whether they've temporarily paused it? I use the Northern line regularly, yet I have only travelled on a total of three trains that have been upgraded.

Hopefully they'll scrap the upgrade cuz it is in many ways a disaster. The new announcements are read at a slower pace than the originals, and the widespread splicing and dicing of old and new makes it sound like a botched job!

Spoke too soon - friend of mine heard the new announcements today. This post confirms that they seem to have returned.

The other day I heard the following while on the Northern line, "The next station is Old Street, change here for Moorfields Eye Hospital and National Rail services", the latest addition to TfL's rail network...?

Brand new here, with a query! I've recently started hearing some Jubilee Line announcements that state the side the doors will open on, same wording as the Victoria Line. "Doors will open on the right-hand side". I've never heard this before, and it sounds like the lines were recorded at a different time to the rest of the announcements. Is this being rolled out or is this at the driver's discretion? I first heard it last week and again this morning, but not on every service I've been on. I've included a link to the audio below. drive.google.com/file/d/0B9pT3gx1N4PQVnJGclFvM2NycUU/view?usp=sharingEdit: Whoops, never mind - this is already being discussed here: districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/26901/new-96ts-door-side-announcement

Today I was on the District Line on the Wimbledon branch on car 21413 and the old mind the gap announcement with Phil Sayer played, I was wondering why this was still the case?

Does anyone know when the DVA on the Piccadilly Line will be updated to reflect the closure of Heathrow Terminal 1?
This happened a year ago but the announcements still refer to "terminating at Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5".

This happened a year ago but the announcements still refer to "terminating at Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5". It seems the DVA on the 73 stock hasnt been updated for years, as it still mentions "Earls Court Exhibition Centre" at Earls Court, and makes no mention of the Circle Line at Hammersmith, so at least since 2009.

One would expect that it hasn't been updated since the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008. There's a few other anachronisms in the system, too.
I would expect that the DVA will, in all honesty, remain as it is until the replacement of the 73TS. Beyond Tube maps the change from T1,2,3 to T2,3 is non-existent, with platform indicators, line diagrams and the station itself all still bearing the original legend. Seems TfL aren't in a rush to change it, although it will be changing at some point.

There are some Northern line staff here who knows something about #51619 announcements? The unit still has the old version, but at Camden Town it is refreshed with the latest version. I took it few weeks ago SB to KEN and it was announcing even the next station and I thought it is because of system but today again NB to Edgware I heard same thing. Why it wasn't full refreshed?
