It has been noted that 09 stock and S stock will be recycling numbers previously used by 1938 stock and R stock respectively, but thesen number blocks have bee free for a long time.
Long ago, I read that one or two Q stock DMs (41xx), and the entire 1960-stock fleet (30xx, 40xx), were renumbered in 1967 to clear a block of numbers for the new 1967 stock, but has this ever happened before? I'm thinking particularly of the large building programme of c1960, with the introduction of A stock and 1959/60/62 stocks.
Did any T stock (2xxx, 9xxx) have to be renumbered to make way for the 1959 stock trailers and NDMs?
Did any standard stock (3xxx DMs, 5xxx CTs) have to be renumbered to make way for the 1960 stock and A stock DMs?
Surface stock Control trailers and A stock trailers (6xxx) are another possibility, but I don't think there were many left of the former by 1960.
Is it even possible that two cars with the same number could have appeared side by side (probably on the Uxbridge branch (T +1959, or A plus standard stock), or on the Central Line (standard plus 1960)?
(I remember reading that this did actually happen on the Southern when the Class 416/2 were supposed to be renumbered from the 57xx to 62xx series, as part of the general plan to give all SR units numbers incorporating the last two digits of their class/sublass number - thus (41)62xx, but it was not happening very fast and the Class 455/7s which were being introduced caught up with them!.
