Why is it that all rolling stock before the D stock has to release a prodigious amount of air from the braking system when the master cab switch is opened and/or the control key is removed?

The D stock only has a main line air supply. When the driver removes his control key, the brakes become electrically isolated and cannot be released. On older stock, say C stock for example, you have train line and main line air supplys. Train line is used to release to release the brakes, so this air supply has to be removed to prevent the brakes from releasing. It's basically a safety precaution to prevent the train from rolling away.

Just to add to 'COLIN's' post, the A stock, C stock, 67ts, 72ts, all have Main Line and Train Line Air, the 73ts, D stock, 92ts, 95ts & 96ts all only have Main Line air. If you hear air escaping in such a way as it does on the stock that has both air lines, it normally means you have a birst on your air pipe, then you have a problem!
