Speaking personally, it's because I've never (officially) driven a 'real' train! I've been on 165/166 MUs, which are really comfortable to drive, with defect diagnosis and rectification reasonalbly straight forward; I've been on the 96TS on the Jubilee which were very easy to diagnose and repair the vast majority of defects; The D78s are lovely to drive, the brakes work when you want them to (altohugh some are a bit weak, but you just compensate for that), the defect handling is relatively simple again.
Now, C stock! The cabs are uncomfortable and draughty for a start. The EP brakes have a nasty habit of suddenly failing, or dropping out just as you want to apply the last little bit to stop at a station. The defects (although easier than A stocks I believe) are a pain to diagnose, unless you have an encyclopeadic knowledge of them as Solidbond has!
The Westinghouse is so 'hit and miss'... One station will stop perfectly on the mark, the next station, you have to blow all the way down the platform and finish by going into emergency to stop on the mark!
I'm sure there are other reasons too, but that's my main ones! ;D

I would agree that the seat is not best in the world, but then you can stand up and drive in a C stock - you can't in a D stock ! I really like the C's because they are proper trains with two air lines, dodgy brakes and a nightmare to get going when they go wrong. A whole 7 or so hours on a D stock is, frankly, BORING cos they're so easy !! ;D

They're certainly a challenge, and if you do 351(?) duty with 4 hours and 10 mins of them on the second half, you certainly know you've done a full shift! In actual fact, I tend to drive standing up on the D stocks! I stand in the middle and look out of the M door, controlling the TBC with my left hand. I can't stand on a C stock because I have to bend down to see through the windscreen, and don't have the option of looking through the M door on a C stock! ;D My fault for being so tall!
