Map of tube lines running at 7am on 28th Sept 1940

It's just a camera photo not a proper scan as it's not a document I was actively looking for in the archives, but thought was interesting.

It records the parts of the network still out of action due to the overnight bombing raids during the Blitz.

Interesting diagram. Wasn't the ELL fully closed due to the need for floodgates on the Thames Tunnel?

The Central Line had obviously not been extended beyond Liverpool Street as that was post-war, and the LNER Northern Heights line from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace and Finchley was not included. One of the portals at the Highgate Woods tunnels (Park Junction) was damaged by a bomb and rebuilt, thus one bore had a round portal and one an arched-shaped one.

My maternal grandfather was a Permanent Way Foreman Ganger at the time and had been since 1931. He was a Great war veteran and then a regular post-war. During the early part of the war, before he resigned around 1943. he was busy with bomb damage repairs. As a consequence LT asked for an extension to be installed upstairs in his Hounslow West home by the GPO [General Post Office] as he needed to be on call 24/7. I think he had a Ford car with a petrol ration to enable him to get to works sites if the UndergrounD was not working.

My grandad was ambulance service during the war. Never liked to talk about it. He was at Bethnal Green that fateful night, said it was terrible - he saw things he would never forget.

My grandad was also there I think. P/way guys (and gals?) had the unfortunate duty of dealing with casualty retrieval. That proved the last straw for him and he resigned.

I can't see Strand on the Northern Line. Probably some historical reason for my ignorance no doubt!

You're not wrong. It's totally missing!
The map above shows
Bakerloo - Piccadilly (now Piccadilly Circus) - Trafalgare Square (now Charing Cross) - Charing Cross (now Embankment) - Waterloo (name unchanged.
Northern - Leicester Square - Charing Cross (now Embankment) - Waterloo (And here's the missing station on the Northern: we now have Leicester Square - Charing Cross - Embankment - Waterloo.)
District - Westminster - Charing Cross (now Embankment) - Temple
We should have the was-Strand-now-Charing Cross showing on that map.

I wonder why not?

For those who don't quite get all these name changes, here's a summary:

Strand as in Aldwych was temporarily closed and was used during WWII to store valuables from the British Museum, amongst other things.

Strand as in Charing Cross is a whole other kettle of fish...
Modern-day Charing Cross
Bakerloo came first, calling it Trafalgar Square.
Northern came the following year, calling it Charing Cross (it was designed to connect with the mainline station of the same name).
There was no interchange below surface and were treated as two separate stations.
In 1914 when the Northern extended south (see Embankment, below) the Northern station was renamed Charing Cross (Strand).
In 1915 the Northern station was renamed Strand. At the same time, Piccadilly Line's Strand was renamed Aldwych.
In 1973, the Northern station closed to enable construction of the Jubilee line platforms.
In 1979, the Northern station reopened and the Jubilee station opened. Together with the new interchange connecting with Trafalgar Square (Bakerloo) station, all three stations were called Charing Cross.

Modern-day Embankment:
District came first, calling it Charing Cross.
Bakerloo came next, calling it Embankment. N.B.: Below-surface interchange was provided but they still had different names!
Then the Northern built an extension - the Charing Cross loop - which had a station here on the northbound bit. The Bakerloo and Northern stations were both called Charing Cross (Embankment). The District station was still called Charing Cross.
In 1915 they called the whole lot Charing Cross.
In 1974 it became Charing Cross Embankment.
In 1976 it became Embankment.

From 1976 to 1979 (when the present Charing X opened),Embankment station (at least the District and Circle platforms) had "for Charing X" under the name.These may have been paper stickers,and might not have counted as a name-change...

The map was for use by LT Civil Engineers to mark damage by bombs etc in WW2, it was a not a map for Tube passengers.
