Two minutes of thinking (it shows....) With the plans for the tram-trains up north, could we use them in London? Howabout extending Tramlink from Beckenham Junction, through Shortlands, on to the roads serving the outside of Bromley South and through the town centre, then taking over Bromley North - Grove Park? Could any use be made of platform 7 at Norwood Junction for a connection from the north to Beckenham Junction? Would tram-trains allow any scope for DLR expansion?

A line ripe for tram conversion is the Romford Upminster line with extra stops at Wingletye Lane, Brentwood Road, Victoria Road. There is room for passing loops. Extend it through Upminster Depot (three or four trams could stable there) to Front lane and it could even go then onto the road up Moor Lane to the proposed old peoples village if they ever get planning permission for it.

While Romford - Upminster with an extension through the depot to Cranham is a route that looks ripe for tram conversion I don't see that it could justify the dedicated rolling stock on its own.

There was a suggestion that the Romford-Upminster line be converted to a tramway as far back as the 60's. I suggested a while ago that the Dagenham Dock extension of the DLR be completed and an extension from there via the Rom Valley to Romford where it could join the Romford-Upminster line. The stock would be fitted with dual mode collection with overhead wire collection on this section. Third/fourth rail collection would be impracticable as there are several pedestrian level crossings on the line.
