I've been a driver on the Picc for 15 years now and have never heard of this happening before, not sure about high pressure and being old it was probably a freak accident.

Toughened glass can `explode` if the surface is scratched or damaged as the glass is effectively under tension. It only needs a knock or a jolt for it to release this tension.

The article said it was between Manor House and Turnpike Lane. I recall that somewhere around there, there's a ventilation shaft that always causes a big 'whoosh' of air and pressure change as a train goes past, I wonder if that could've been what caused the window to finally give.

The reporting is rather silly isn't it? For one thing, toughened glass does not become "shards" when broken, just small, blunt particles. The whole point of it is it's relatively harmless when broken. I had a Cortina full of it and all over me in the days of toughened windscreens (before they switched to laminated glass) when a stone hit it at 70mph. Not a scratch......

Don't want to say too much about it, but it was my colleague and I who investigated the train at the request of the line controller.
As others have said, the article is a bit over the top. The train wasn't particularly busy, and nobody reported any injuries. The glass wasn't in shards at all, instead it was in small pieces as has been previously suggested. Although this is not ideal, it did not pose as much of a hazard as normal broken glass would have done.
After reporting back to the line controller and consulting with the diver, the train was taken out of service and sent empty to Northfields depot. Not going to say anything else, but thats the basic gist of things.

I think given the sensationalist reporting elsewhere on this one that I'm going to invoke 7.3(c) and snap the padlock on it.
