Are there any arrival times available for any 5-car trains yet for any station?

Are there any arrival times available for any 5-car trains yet for any station? I know the 1740 from Highbury & Islington to Crystal Palace has the 5 car unit.

That would have been a one off. Unit allocation for the day doesn't work like that, it won't always be on the 1740 from Highbury. The units are on circuits, either alternating at Highbury, going to Crystal Palace and Clapham Junction. Or alternating at Dalston to New Cross and West Croydon. A train coming from Crystal Palace, will go in to Platform 2 at Highbury and form the next Clapham Junction service and vice versa. Same at Dalston. A train returning to Dalston from New Cross will go in to Platform 3 and form the next West Croydon service. Control and Bombardier make the allocation plan the night before, depending on where they need units berthed, for maintenance etc. If you see it in the morning, it should be easy to work out where it will be for the rest of the day, a bit tedious but can be done.

Only the one so far. 135. 137 was unusually at Hornsey yesterday morning - there to get its fifth car added?

Only the one so far. 135. Cool, I managed to see and board it at Highbury & Islington just after 2pm today although I have to say I'm not impressed with the SDO announcements, which I did anticipate in the first place. IMHO the SDO announcements of the S7 & S8 stock are way better by a clear mile.

We were told it wouldn't be until the first couple of 5 cars are in service before the SDO announcements would be on, and told to do manual announcements until then. The 5th carriages are attached in New Cross Gate depot. The Wheel Lathe and Heavy Clean buildings have been reconfigured to enable this, as such, wheel lathing now takes place in Hornsey.

It sounds like this (for Wapping): After leaving the previous station: There is no change the annoucement is still the same. On approach: [can be heard in all carriages] The next station is Wapping. Would customers please note that you can only alight from the 4 coaches as this station has a short platform. Please ensure you are travelling in the corect part of the train. [Juile Berry's voice] This is coach number x of 5. At the station: [can be heard in all carriages] This is Wapping. Would customers please note that you can only alight from the 4 coaches as this station has a short platform. Please ensure you are travelling in the corect part of the train. This is the London Overground service to Crystal Palace. The next station is Rotherhithe.

So is Julie Berry voicing all announcements on the 5 car unit or a mix of her and Emma Hignett?

Julie Berry's "This is coach number * of *" was already on the system on each train. I remember during traction training 4 years ago, we were learning hands on the PIS system and playing around with it. I have no idea what combination I pressed but it played through the train. I did the same on a few other units, but 4 years later I can not remember. I shall have to try again next week when I'm back in.

Please ensure you are travelling in the correct part of the train. [Juile Berry's voice] This is coach number x of 5. That's quite an intriguing concept for walk-through carriages! If you were sat by the join, surely you would half hear both? e.g. 'This is coach number thre-our of five' :S Plus should't they really be referred to as 'cars'...

Plus should't they really be referred to as 'cars'... The UndergrounD has cars, which are kept in car sheds. Other railways have carriages, which are kept in carriage sheds or carriage sidings. Coaches belong on roadways.

Ha. Yeah, but technically TfL refer to them as cars right?

Something Mr. Yerkes brought from America with him? Indeed - which is also why they run on trucks, not bogies.

I certainly agree as this is exactly the case when I was travelling in the 5-car train. 'This is coach number thre-our of five'. I'd prefer them to be referred to as cars or carriages but not coaches however I suspect that DVA is National Rail's doing. It would've been a lot better if the announcements were carriage specific and interchange + 'alight here for' information was removed permanently as regards to when a train is at a station. If it can be done on London Underground's S7 & S8 stock then it certainly can be done for London Overground's EMUs.

I find this type of thread incredible. Tittle-tattling about minutiae which has little relevance to real life. When I first joined this forum (when D D was around) it was full of useful and interesting information etc;--now on the whole it is full of hot air which appears to come from beautiflly manicured twits rushing around showing each other rubbish images on their tablets etc . You know who I mean.

I don't think it really matters in the slightest whether they're referred to as coaches, carriages or cars. People sit in them regardless and furthermore, the paying public who can be bothered to listen to the infernal DVAs don't care either, but will know exactly what the announcements mean regardless of the word used. I won't be blowing a gasket over it that's for sure, and that's unusual for me. Now if you want a proper argument, ask an angler the definition of a dry fly and see what happens..........

The point I'm trying to make is that passengers needn't know what carriage they are in and that the SDO announcements should be carriage specific just like the doors themselves.

There are now 3 five car units in service, 135, 137 and 141.
I personally think they've got the announcements all wrong. Announcing it when the train is just pulling in to the station just isn't enough time for passengers to understand what is going on.
"passengers needn't know what carriage they are in". I disagree, as soon as I pulled in to Whitechapel and put the internal CCTV on, passengers were jabbing at the door open button frantically and looking around panicked until I could here the "this is coach number" message play, then they moved en masse to the next carriage.
One thing that gets me, if they'd just look through the glass in front of them they would see a wall. Why do they still think they can get off there?
