BBC London news reporting the Mayor of London will later announce that London Overground will operate "24hr at weekends" from 2017.

I can't see how it'll work on lines where NR need access to their infrastructure, but a Dalston Junction to New Cross/New Cross Gate service could work where TfL own that part of the ELL.

Apparently the DLR and Sub Surface lines follow on from 2021 - according to the BBC. I expect the press releases will emerge on the web later when we might get some more detail.

It could probably operate to Croydon (maybe east rather than west), as Thameslink services run to Gatwick overnight (although not current Sunday am). Whether it would be able to call at intermediate stops would be another matter.

According to Railnews "24-hour operation will be extended to the Highbury & Islington to New Cross Gate section of London Overground in 2017"

Quote from the Railnews article:
"But the extensions of all-night operation will need higher staffing levels, according to the RMT. The union's general secretary Mick Cash said: "This announcement has been dropped on London by the Mayor as a blatant pre election stunt without a shred of consultation with the union. That is a ridiculous way to conduct important negotiations and to unveil major service developments. RMT is not opposed to extended running but there are massive issues on staffing, safety and maintenance which have not been addressed and which would need to be signed off by our ?reps."
Also sounds like RMT rubbish as New Cross Gate depot has no RMT presence and certainly no reps!

Surely the RMT have a presence amongst station staff and also maintenance workers (even though they're contracted in for the ELL)? Even if you narrow it down to Highbury, Whitechapel and Canada Water (all run by LU) then there is scope for the RMT to raise concerns. I can certainly see Canada Water being an issue given how ridiculously busy it is in the daytime.

I have emailed to see if West Anglia routes will be 24hrs. I suspect so, because they ran 24hrs this New Year with one per hour to Enfield Town and Cheshunt all night, unlike many other lines. Without this, buses from Seven Sisters will get crazy busy once Victoria Line is 24hrs.

I've always wondered why Chingford hasn't been 24 hours, that would also seem a logical route to have all night running on, given the last departure from London isn't until after 1am, and first departure from Chingford Monday to Saturday is around 05:20.

Last Chingford train is 01:03, arriving Chingford 01:29. Liverpool Street Station stays open EVERY DAY until 01:03 for that train. Unfortunately many buses stop running from Chingford at 12:40, including the 313 that would get me home.
I have emailed TFL and asked whether they will add West Anglia to 24hr trains, or at least run the Seven Sisters trains an hour later to match Chingford and capture all normal day last Victoria Line tubes.

I won't comment on the idea itself, but weren't there all-night services into the '60's at least, somewhere in that vicinity, and on the Bromley North Branch into the 80's, because of the Fleet-Street print workers, principally?

TFL is taking over stations on West Anglia with the sole exception of Liverpool Street and Cheshunt.

TfL press release is very clear.
Only refers to core section of East London Line.
No other lines.
Just think how much Network Rail would want to keep Liverpool Steet open.

I wonder if when that happens, Thameslink's 24hr service could be encouraged to call at NCG

According to my Summer 1963 Eastern Region timetiable Chingford had an hourly service all night and a daytime service of 6tph. There was no 24 hour service to Enfield Town or on Lea Valley services. Shenfield / Southend had only a 2 hour gap out of LST and a rather more eratic service into London.
Of course in those days LST was open through the night for Royal Mail and newspaper traffic.

The all night service on the Chingford line was initially only as far as Walthamstow Wood St (nothing like print workers at Hale End or Chingford!) The way to do it to avoid the problem of keeping LV open 24hrs would be to run Walthamstow C - Chingford only. What about Crossrail though?

Similarly, TFL could run 24 hour service from Seven Sisters, or even Bethnal Green, without impinging on any non TFL station, but they will not be running Cheshunt, though they did run Cheshunt services 24hrs on New Year's Eve. TFL could also run Seven Sisters trains from Liverpool Street up until 01:00 from Liverpool Street because it stays open until 01:03 for the last Chingford train. This would serve the last Victoria Line tube, which presently disgorges onto buses only at Seven Sisters, which must be a logistical nightmare.
