I was at South Kensington tube today, and there was overcrowding on the stairs to the SSL platforms (also used by Piccadilly passengers). Every so often, the member of staff at the ticket barriers would ask people to stop to let the backlog at the stairs clear. For the 5 or so times I observed this, at least 5, or even up to 15 passengers would just plainly ignore him. I've seen this around the network quite frequently. Why can't there be a button for staff to press which stops all selected barriers from responding to a ticket or an oyster card? It would make it a lot easier to stop passengers. Displaying a simple X No Entry could also be used.

There IS a method in use, on the new style gatelines, it switches all reversible barriers to Exit Mode Only, It was introduced around 1998, in the prestige project, where newer gatelines can be set up to be Exit-Only for just this reason.

I've seen it done at King's cross but I'm convinced that the gates have been closed both ways (exit as well).
