Following discussions in this thread (now locked) I can confirm that a software upgrade has been successfully tested which enables more tractive power to be drawn on modified units. This is now being rolled out across the fleet. In spite of a lot of conjecture regarding the reasons for the original power loss when 5 car 378's came in to service this was all down to an error in developing the original software. Following feedback from drivers LOROL management, far from wishing to restrict power due to supposedly high incident rates, have in fact been working to restore performance to at least that of the 4 car units. Having now driven a couple of the modified units myself I can confirm that acceleration has significantly improved and is at least on a par with 4 car units and if anything it improved pick up on gradients over the 4 cars let alone the pre-update 5 car formations. I might add that however well intended the speculation around the reasons for the power loss, the assertion that this might have been down to professional drivers being unable to adjust their drive style to handle the power was way off the mark. My own view is that that kind of conjecture has no place on a forum unless it is fact-based. While I always knew that to be the case we were not sure exactly what the reason was for the original power loss. We do now and therefore the rapid rollout of the new software confirms the company view that restored, or even enhanced 378 acceleration is an asset to operations rather than a liability.

I actually thought they accelerated quicker as 5 cars before this upgrade that you talk of!

I actually thought they accelerated quicker as 5 cars before this upgrade that you talk of! No - far from it! That said I would be interested to learn of the experience of NLL drivers, whether they too experienced a drop in acceleration as AC units running off the wires always had the edge over those running on DC.

From a passengers point of view who uses WLL/NLL regularly, at least in AC mode they seem to accelerate much faster than the 4 cars!

Since the few upgraded units have been out, I've noticed a decrease in cautionary aspects on the core route, especially when coming from New Cross (where we are closely following a unit from Clapham). I can only assume it's due to the software update, nothing else has changed. Hopefully this will get things moving a bit quicker!

Any figures as to what the respective m/s^2 values are for 4, 5, and 5 enhanced cars?

Video of a 5 car departing West Hampstead of course on AC, to me it looks faster accelerating than a 4 car

Any figures as to what the respective m/s^2 values are for 4, 5, and 5 enhanced cars? Unsure as to what the acceleration figures per Metre Squared are for the 378 fleet, however a simple calculation shows that: 4 car unit 9 motors divided by 4 cars equals 2.25 motors per car 5 car unit 12 motors divided by 5 cars equals 2.4 motors per car Although only a marginal difference in the amount of power available I wouldn't place too much emphasis on this as the true power available to the drivers is controlled by software which it seems was calculated by a care in the community employee locked in an unlit cupboard at Derby with a slide rule (just kidding, the door isn't locked) I think it would be safe to assume that the 5 car units have more available power to the drivers so they will perform better.
