I had the opportunity this evening to visit Tower Hill to see what the state of the building works are, and frankly it's a mess see poor photos below (it was dark, and rush hour). Most of the area outside the entrance has been taken over by hoardings, so there is very limited space - I suggest we meet not directly outside the entrance, but down the stairs from the entrance by the statue of Trajan. To reach the station entrance from the exit: 1. After passing through the gateline, take the exit to the left into the covered passage and turn left again. 2. Take the exit on the right and go down the stairs and follow the route left. 3. The Entrance is diagonally ahead on your right. 4. To get to Trajan, go past the entrance and down the next set of stairs. The statue is in the small garden on your left. From Fenchurch Street 1. Take the Coopers Row exit from the station and turn left 2. Go straight ahead past the "Road ahead closed" signs 3. Keep left to use the temporary pedestrian path separated from the road by orange barriers 4. Pass to the left of the "Tower Hill Tram" 5. Turn left and use the right-most channel to avoid the exit building. 6. Follow the directions above from point 2. From Tower Gateway the route is essentially as normal, but there is less space. Annotated air photo, this is an approximation of my understanding of the present situation based on one visit 1 - Looking towards Tower Hill from Coopers Row (the route from Fenchurch Street). 2 - the area outside the exit from Tower Hill station. 3 - the entrance to Tower Hill station. This view is from the steps down from the passage alongside the exit building .

Chris, many thanks for taking the trouble to do this! So, everybody who'll be attending, we'll now converge on the Statue of Trajan, outside Tower Hill Station for 11am on Saturday 12th December. Please use Chris's excellent map and directions as shown above.

Sounds like this is going to be fun.
Will the traditional custard feature in a remake of ykw as:
"The District Line forum that turned Yellow"?

What is the shortest time that Chris's Christmas Quiz has been solved and can we try and beat it this year?

This year's Christmas quiz (completed today) is in the same format as the one in September - 30 individual images, released 3 every half hour from when we get to the pub / from 1pm online (planned, that bit not yet completed). In September, some of them were identified immediately others took a lot longer.

Having looked at all the images, my guess is that this will be the order of difficulty: Least 07 13 30 11 02 25 15 19 10 03 29 01 23 12 18 17 20 09 03 14 08 16 06 04 22 21 24 16 28 05 Most
The selection of locations is partly random - all (circa 400) potential images were put in a random order and viewed sequentially, selecting the first ones to give a good geographical spread. The order of the 30 selected images was chosen purely a random.

As promised, here is the meet phone number: 07770 195136Antharro (Dave) will be in charge of it... so please be nice to him should you need to use it. Apologies all, however as things currently stand, I'm unlikely to be able to make the meet. My youngest decided to stop walking without warning as he approached a doorway whilst going to see Santa at Marsh Farm in Essex last Saturday... while I was immediately approaching the same doorway from behind. Being considerably smaller and not noticing his unexpected stationary status, I tripped over him, knocking him sideways (no injuries) while I had to recover my balance... which caused me to jar my back. I've been off work all week resting with lumber strain... however I'm still unable to put my socks on, with my back being particularly stiff and painful during the morning... although it does loosen up during the afternoon... along with an considerable odour of Deep Heat which is being liberally applied. I will make a final call on Friday... being mindful that I need to return to work on Monday morning.

Try Chemist Direct for Magic Wintergreen Rub, though you might be able to pick it up over the counter elsewhere. Has come in useful a couple of times when Mrs tbf's fallen over.

I'm finally off the Deep Heat, however my back is sadly still a little sore/stiff when I move about for too long... but I am on the mend and hope to be commuting again on Monday Therefore I've made the call not to come along tomorrow Have a good one (I look forward to seeing some photos) and please raise a jar... or more ... to our founder

Unfortunately like Chris I'm on the sick list as well with my back, (especially after my hospital visit today!) and won't be able to attend tomorrow.
Hope all of you that are going tomorrow have a good time and allow yourself the odd drink or ten.

Nevertheless, the last thing you need to do with a bad back is aggravate it again when you're near the finishing line. We will indeed raise a jar or more and try and post the pictures as soon as we can.

I won't be able to join you, as I am on step-dad duties today.
I hope the journey to Ealing Broadway goes well, and the right stock comes along. The last time I went to Ealing Broadway with a group of District Dave types, was on a 1967 stock.
Have fun!

I have one last piece of paperwork to co-sign and be witnessed in connection with my forthcoming house move and won't be able to make the tube journey from Tower Hill to Holborn, is it OK to meet you all in the Penderel's Oak instead.

Sorry, tied with Mrs tbf's OU tutorial today (don't ask) so here's a vid for you, the rhythm of which was described as like a Tube train on its' release in early 1967-enjoy!!
Oh, and enjoy the drink, too.

Right, I've had a bit of a chance to do some size editing on the pictures I took yesterday. They do seem to get progressively more blurred......... Roding Valley on Saturday morning after the drive down. Selfie looking down the line towards Chigwell just prior to the arrival of tut . Chris M , caravelle , @xercesfobe , and tut lurking outside Tower Hill station. sawb is hiding behind tut. I'm not entirely sure what ChrisM is doing to xercesfobe here but it seems to have given him quite a scare...... ........on a D Stock with sawb and Dstock7080 . Também, tut e Caravelle no trem para Ealing Broadway Our destination and the local train map. At the pub........Dstock7080, ChrisM, sawb, Tomcakes and caravelle. A ravenous melikepie who actually didn't have the pie..... The pudding of metman , or was it his second? The prize for the best dressed attendee went to rtt1928 , the only one of us who made the effort to wear a bowler hat, waistcoat and bow tie. With the temperature in the pub being close to the surface of the sun I was afraid for his wellbeing at first, looking like he'd just run a four minute mile but happily he'd cooled down enough by the time it came to pictures to avoid us all seeing the steam coming out of his collar. And finally, the upmarket carton of custard supplied by caravelle to keep with tradition. I'm afraid to say that, having been entrusted to my safekeeping it came in jolly handy later on at Woodford station when I got a bit peckish. I'd like to add my thanks to ChrisM for his quiz having managed to get one right myself (following a spot of cheating by googling a visible phone number) in order to get "Greenwich" and to everybody who turned up, particularly antharro who was still suffering a dreadful hangover at lunchtime from the night before. It was a good day out and it was nice to see you all. Rich'

Yes indeed, thank you very much to all who came, I had a great time meeting you all (again). Also, a hearty get well soon to all who couldn't make it through illness and injury! And thanks to whistlekiller2000 for the piccies - I think #6 could do with a little more blurring ...

Adding my small contribution here, I would like to thank all present in body and spirit the great time spent journeying through "Lunnen" and the drinks afterwards.
A special thank you to Chris M for the bonus quiz and the way it gets members talking to each other and sharing their knowledge and thoughts.

So glad you found a use for it as I hate to see good food go to waste. How is upmarket custard compared to the "bog standard" custard?
Cheers.
