Hi I saw this post on Facebook of a 1959 stock at Uxbridge sometime in the 1970s the train number is 32 somthing. Does anybody have any ideas to what it might of been doing on the line. Cheers

Cheers Most (*) of the 59 stock was built for the Piccadilly Line. The fleet was transferred to the Northern Line upon delivery of the 1973 stock. (* a handful of cars were built as a stop-gap for the Central Line and were subsequently incorporated in the 1962 stock).

Much of the 1959 stock deliveries were first diverted to the Central because of the dire state of the Standard stock on that line, as much of it had been stored in the open during WW2 war, as the conversion of the line to suit them was suspended for the duration (the Piccy's had worked throughout the War, and so although they had more miles under their belts they had been properly maintained). As the Central used eight car trains and the Picc only seven, an additional car was built for each train. The plans to design bespoke stock for the Central (of which the 1960 stock was the prototype) was cancelled and replaced by an order for more of the same - the 1962 stock - allowing the 1959 stock to go to the Picc for which it had been intended. The extra car from each 1959 train was incorporated in the 1962 trains.

Cheers HI i started work at northfields depot in 1978 the picc run 59 stock and 1973 stock in service then, unless it was a test train. FISH7373 81C NFP

In the early 60's - up till 1963-4, the Picc was probably the most interesting and varied of the all the deep tube lines. In rush hours you could find that the next train might be composed of Standard Stock, 1938TS, 1956TS and possibly the odd train of 1959 stock that hadn't found its way to the Central Line. Standard stock was by no means confined to the Aldwych shuttle at that time.

The variety on the Picc would have been spiced up even more on its western reaches, where O, P, Q and R stock could be seen on the parallel District tracks. (Or even the same tracks as far as Ealing Common and, until 1964, on the Hounslow branch). Q stock itself came in a wide variety of styles, often in the same train Similarly in the late seventies the Northern had a mix of 1938, 1956, 1959, and both marks of 1972 stock.

Arun your post brought back memories. Went to School in Wood Green 58-63 ans spent a while 'spotting' at Wood Green UG stn. kept on swapping bewteen platforms to get the 'incoming stock' until we saw the 'outbound' of it then stayed on the i/c side. Yes every train was a surprise, and when plane spotting was included ( if it had wheels we made a note of the number!!) the overground part from Barons court to Hounslow West and then an 81B bus to heathrow central ,special through tickets IIRC from Wood Green. The District line formations had us ecstatic. Only thing missing was a decent camera,or indeed a rough one!
