On Tue 31/5/16, there was a signal failure at Rayners Lane. What was odd was that it was only affecting Uxbridge trains, which were being diverted to Northfields. Rayners Lane reversers and Met line trains were unaffected.
What circumstances caused this to be the case?

It could be the fault was not something specific to 1973 stock, but just something preventing the normal service frequency between Rayner's and Uxbridge. I'm not sure that s8 stock will fit the siding at Rayner's, so the Piccy it would have to be. And as there is a limit to how many you can reverse at Rayner's, the rest had to go somewhere else, in this case Northfield.

You can hear it from the signaller directly! The station starter from the eastbound platform was failing to clear onto the Piccadilly line, trains were able to reverse off the westbound platform as that route was working just fine as were routes onto the met. A strategy to cancel all Uxbridge services was implemented due to the extra moves involved (detraining at Rayners on the E/B, shunting into the siding, train op changing ends the shunting back out onto the W/B platform) this would have caused a great deal of congestion in the Rayners Lane area and so the service was thinned out. The cause of the failure was a failing relay. HTH

So the OP was right and my guess was wrong- it was a fault that only affected Piccadilly trains, and although there was a workaround , it only worked for trains starting from Rayner's lane

High resistance contact failure on a relay for a change not the points
