The ticket machines - are they the new format ones being installed on Crossrail too - with the multiple languages including Hindi and Mandarin too? THEY ARE NOT NEW MACHINES. Multiple languages have been available on all LUL POMs for over two years. Crossrail should have an entirely new design of machine not dissimilar from NR TVMs, but with 'rear servicing' functionality. The "newer, smarter" MFMS, AFMs and QBMs are beyond life expired, even the newest (for the JLE but now all over the place) are getting on for 20 years old. My favourite machines were the box type machines, with a sloping glass front, with the fare value (or on the later models, two rows of buttons on the edge with ten of the most popular fare values from that station to choose from. (I think it was called the Thorn EMI 10/10 machine, but can't remember exactly). They lasted many decades in service on the Tube, until they replaced with the current generation of UTS wall mounted ticket machines in 1989.

You don't know that it wasn't. High winds can cause all sorts to happen - just look at the widespread disruption across the UK rail network, including damage to the roof of Lichfield City station which has stood for many years.
Let's wait for more information to become apparent as to what and how has caused any injuries.

Looks like the "Victoria" part of the station name has been blown loose

The entrance is still closed today (5 days later). On the day after the incident there was a gathering of six people standing on the roof, presumably investigating a problem up there. I did not notice loose signage around the entrance. I have to say the arrangement of the tall buildings in the vicinity does seem to increase wind velocity, especially through Cardinal Place, so this entrance will be subjected to quite a bit of strong wind through its life. Lets hope the design is up to the job

Looks like the "Victoria" part of the station name has been blown loose But the "station" bit remained stationary?

More obviously there is a section of the roof edge missing from above the red arrow, with the other three sides looking to be held down with bags of sand / cement. It is more likely that is the section that blew off. Regards, Dan

I was surprised to note this evening that the bags of sand/cement are still present on the roof, so it seems there is no rush to remedy whatever problem has occurred - perhaps meaning that a solution might be complicated?

I suspect it's one or more of: *The solution is complicated and hasn't been finalised yet *The solution requires one or more parts that haven't arrived yet *The solution is disruptive to implement and so needs to be scheduled for a time that has not yet happened *The solution requires liaison with other parties to implement and so needs to be scheduled for a time that has not yet happened *The solution requires staff or contractor time to implement that has not yet been available *One or more parties has not completed their investigation into the occurrence and the solution cannot be implemented until that time *There are ongoing discussions about who is responsible for fixing it and/or paying for it to be fixed.

A quote about the incident from the newly published Commissioner's Report that goes to next week's Board Meeting.

I’ve unlocked this thread - does anyone have an update for when the new ticket hall of Victoria is going to open? It *should* be pretty soon.

I’ve unlocked this thread - does anyone have an update for when the new ticket hall of Victoria is going to open? It *should* be pretty soon. Following conversations from staff at the station, I was under the impression that somewhere near the end of February was the target date although someone since has dubiously changed the publicized target to Summer 2018 which would imply the last days of June at the very least.

The Cardinal Place entrance was closed today with lots of vans outside and people in orange working on the roof - perhaps they’re getting round to fixing it before part of it falls off again.

I've heard a little whisper that the new gateline, entrance and escalators at Victoria will be open from 12noon today. I'm popping out at lunchtime anyway so will take a look. How exciting </nerd>

That's a bit harsh...... Where I work is full of geeks. I always say that being a nerd is the uncool side of geekery Anyhoos, I went at about 1300 and the platform staff told me it was going to be uncovered around 3pm. It wasn't where I thought it was going to be, tbh, as you walk down from the mainline station the enlarged ticket area is on the right. I'll go down later and take some more pics when it's actually open - sorry about the quality, it was taken above hoardings and around chicken wire. (And I've lived round the corner, effectively on a building site for the last six or seven years. I can't wait for all of the building work to be finally completed)

The inside looks great, but the outside photo shows the monstrous carbuncle entrance on the front of Victoria Station. Didn't TfL learn from that horrid entrance building in front of King's Cross?!

In both cases, from my point of view, it was a wasted opportunity to build something sympathetic and in keeping with the existing structures. Functional boxes do the job but they're hardly inspiring pieces of architecture in such iconic areas.

Have just got back home, 2 hours ago I was at Victoria, changing from District / Circle to Brighton did not see the new bit in use, but the Station was closed (at least the entrance down from the Brighton Porte-cochère) due to overcrowding on the Vic platforms!

You sound exactly like the Inspectors of Ancient Monuments with whom I used to work at English Heritage, and their entrenched attitudes about having prefabricated ticket-booths or sales points hidden as fully as possible from the ruined castle or abbey in question. Battles between them & our presentation people were probably better 'fun' than any Sealed-Knot reenactments! And, just like them, you are exactly right.

Well, I tell you now, there’s nothing pant-wettingly exciting. The new entrance is open but not the escalators or corridors. I asked someone on the gate line and he thought it would be next month. Outside the station is station is starting to open up, which is nice, but there’s still a lot of work to do, the whole area is going to be a building site for another 18 months at least (it’s really starting to get boring now). Downstairs it’s clear there’s loads more room. I assume at some point they’re going to section off the old ticket hall and refurb that to match the new, so I’d imagine there’s months and possibly a year or so of work to go on it. That’s not to mention the other corridors and areas still with big blue boards in front of it. That entrance looks super-modern in styling - shiny glitzy glass and metal would be 'just the ticket' for most new build locations but here the entrance should have been designed to match / blend in with the mainline station.
