Lovely post.
Forgive an anecdote added to your post.
There were still some old trains around including 1938 tube stock when Heathrow Airport Central opened. The instruction was given "no 1938 tube stock to Heathrow". Inevitably within what I recall was a short time, a 1938 tube stock went to Heathrow. I have seen photographic evidence but don't have any photos in my possession.

How is that possible? 1938 stock was withdrawn from the Piccadilly Line at the end of 1975. It ran occasionally to Hatton Cross, which opened a few months earlier, but Heathrow Central did not open until 1977.
1959 stock certainly ran to Heathrow Central though.

Probably confused by pictures like this. Heritage train at T4.

I tend to agree, ‘38s definitely got to Hatton Cross and ‘59s to Heathrow Central but ‘38s to Heathrow I would say not.

Definitely not in revenue service but definitely did as the 38ts heritage train. I suppose it still can today if permitted. This link has a few shots of it at T123 (as was) in addition to the shot I posted below at T4.

I have seen photographic evidence but don't have any photos in my possession. The 1938 Tube Stock had long gone by the time Heathrow Central was opened. The last one ran in December 1975 on the Piccadilly, but they did manage to run to and from Hatton Cross (from July 1975). I was the District/Piccadilly Line Controller when that happened. They had Hatton Cross destination plates which, I guess, were stickers over something (probably Hounslow). The remaining 1959s (and 1x3 1962) on the Piccadilly at that time were given new blinds, which included Heathrow with an aircraft symbol. 1938s have, of course, since run to Heathrow in "railtour" form.

Nice post. I've never used the LU to Heathrow but I always passed by Hatton Cross station on my way to and from it. I grew up on the Heathrow flightpath and because of that I became interested in aviation (I'm a bit of a plane enthusiast as well as an LU one and that's something I've been into since childhood). For a time I wanted to be a Concorde pilot. Sadly that never worked out. Ended up studying law in the end.

Some delightful footage from the 38 railtour in 1986 when it visited T4 prior to the stations opening.
