This suspended the service south of Victoria for several hours, running into the evening peak.
Anyone have any details as to why it took so long? Was it actually a signal failure or a problem with the points?

Issue with an Insulated Blockjoint which caused a track circuit to show down (i.e. occupied).
The reason it took so long was that despite a number of track inspections and further testing of signalling components, the cause of the fault could not be identified.

The joys of insisting on having block joints on a Jointless System
It took so long as there was a couple of issues 1) The track involved was part of the diamond crossing at Brixton and as such involved many block joints 2) All the point insulations would of been ruled out first 3) The tester which is used to test current in the track circuit went defective 4) It was harder to get the replacement equipment on site due to the service being suspended

The underlying cause was a negative earth cable fault which caused a poorly insulated ibj to arc current across to the adjacent track to drag the track down This was the reason for the long delay

I always used to correct designers on this sort of thing if they included the phrase 'Insulated Block Joint' in their designs - it was one of my pet hates! It's either a Block Joint or an Insulated Rail Joint, by definition a Blockjoint must be insulated!
