Today marks the 50th anniversary of the official opening of the line by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. There is more than enough footage online of the opening of the ceremony itself, with Her Majesty starting a train at Green Park and riding to Victoria, so I thought I would share something different from our collection. Henry George Follenfant was London Transport's chief civil engineer at the time. On the same date, he was presented with a case of 12 coasters from his staff, each of which had the official photograph of the tiling for one of the 12 stations along the line: |

Follenfant's other big project was the Heathrow extension otherwise known as his folly.
The route has surface and cut and cover sections linked to the tunnelled section by a very short bridge.
All the classic construction techniques for a railway.

My guess (please correct me if I'm wrong) would be the fact that it was built to tube gauge rather than SSR gauge (which prevents any SSR trains being sent there or any branch swaps with the District line). |

Exactly that. No - it was compared to a garden folly. He used all the construction methods to sign off his time with London Transport. Coming up to the surface to cross a very short bridge was hardly necessary. |

Okay.... yes, I see what you mean with sections of cut-n-cover, deep level tube and the rise to the surface to ctoss the river Crane, but is it true to say that's all 'for show?' ...isn't deep level tunnelling the most expensive method of railway construction and should be avoided where possible? Personally I#m quite a fan of the Heathrow extension, my only gripe is what happened later when terminal five was made into a separate branch instead of being kept in the loop line |

We might as well have a 50 year old joke to go with the opening anniversary.
An Italian girl goes home to mama and says "mama, i'm a gonna change ma name to Veectoreeaah Choobe Leenie". Mama asks "why my daughter you wanna change your name like that?" So the daughter pulls out a copy of the Evening News with the headline "Victoria Tube Line laid by 20,000 men in 3 years"
