1) What does it say on the right hand side first carriage where the roundel would be? (Seen on Julian's photo) 2) Why does it need not 1 backup train number, but 2 ones? (Or is it just a case of "better safe than sorry" in case one falls over or something)

Well I guess someone hates these naff/tiny DMI/LED type displays we're forced to put up with these days.
I can't understand how, on LU, which is obsessed with "Equality & Inclusion" (sic), they can allow destination displays on new trains that are far smaller than provided in the 1960s-1980s, let alone before that.
At least LRT, the real LRT (Lothian Regional Transport), continues with proper 3-panel bus destination blinds, motorised and with rear displays; when will TFL learn from this, instead of dumming-down yet more?

PP2 was test running with additional instrumentation to record various data for several technical / relibility growth workstreams. In earlier months the DMI train number displays had not been commissioned hence the non electronic ones. They are still on board so we still use them as well. No real need for two back ups though! Regarding the DMI Destination displays, they do meet the RVAR requirements and they display route as well as destination. Then if you miss the one on the front, there's another on the side of every car. I do agree they are not quite as clear as a good roller blind but I think the S stock DMI's are pretty good.

Indeed, I would rather have more information shown... and if all those blinds were manual the driver would have to spend an hour changing them all over at each terminus! A little off topic but how good would it be if LUL could arrange a photoshoot at Upminster with all 4 surface stocks side-by-side. Maybe even wheel out a Q stock driving car for completeness. There won't be many more opportunities to have all of the surface stocks built since the formation of London Transport together.

I saw the Pre-Production Train 2 on Test earlier, it went to Uxbridge and Watford What was it testing for? We were mainly carrying out Propulsion tests. In addition there was some additional testing following the Uxbridge incident. NB: Sorry, I got a bit mixed up with some OPO testing we have coming up. Hence the modified post.

We started off with printed/laminated cards and then procured some 'C' Stock set numbers from Hammersmith Depot. So they have just been left in the cab. In the early days before the DMI software was fully validated we couldn't always guarantee it would be working and generally we would be going out to test as the published last train. In these circumstances it is very important to display the correct number as staff will be looking for the last train to pass before accessing the track.

Just as a comment on the blinds vs DMI thing, blinds wouldn't have to be manual. As stated bus companies use motorised blinds, and NYCS has motorised blinds at the front, side and rear of some of its stocks that show the current route.
Also noone ever mentions LCD screens. Size is very important with DMIs, but resolution too is.
