Not sure if it's been discussed already but was an answer given as to why PEDs have not been installed on the extension? The point the 1995 stock fleet lifecycle is at (roughly halfway) plus the fact this extension would only give two fitted stations means the cost benefit would be marginal at best. Future proofing for fittement has been included in the Platform Train Interface of the new stations when the time comes for a new fleet when it would make economic sense to kit out the rest of the below ground stations on the line.

I read in a Railway mag a while back that there are plans on extending the Northern line...I believe near Kennington or Stockwell. I saw a picture of the planned diagram for the extension and wondered whether anyone else has heard about this or knows about this extension? From what I understand, this should be finished next year sometime

I have a note that the Battersea Power Station developer’s December 2010 newsletter reports that Wandsworth Council has approved the planning application after three years of consultation, but approval from the Mayor and Government are still awaited. Investment backing will be sought in early 2011 so that work on site can commence later in the year. The project timeline requires Northern Line extension approval mid-2012, with service commencing mid-2016.

With trial operations now underway, various details have now made their way into the public domain with the conformation of a 6 tph peak and 5 tph off-peak service on the NLE when it first opens rising to a 12 tph peak and 10 tph off-peak service after in 2022 (presumably after the Bank Branch blockade). Mill Hill East is also confirmed as getting the remainder of it's direct service restored. TFL Press Release hereWTT58: Battersea trains every 12min off-peak via Charing Cross; pattern= Barnet, Mill Hill, Barnet, Barnet, Barnet each-hour. 15min service from Mill Hill alternating: Morden via Bank; Battersea via Charing Cross; Morden via Bank; Kennington via Charing Cross each hour. still 15tph off-peak Charing Cross trains use Kennington loop

Probably (actually no, almost certainly) a silly question, but is this WTT publicly available anywhere?

There was concern expressed earlier up this thread for training all staff before opening in view of staff shortages. With this less frequent start up service, can they do as the District resignalling, and put instructor operators on the platform at Kennington to accompany trains on the branch? With only two stations they would probably need only two or three on each shift.

Timetable has been revealed, just awaiting official opening date to be announced. Speaking of which, I had a thought last night. Now it makes sense that TfL wouldn't want to publicly reveal the opening date while Trial Operations are ongoing in case any last minute hiccups happened but the question that came to my mind was: Once there is sufficient confidence to reveal it to the public, how far in advance of opening would it be announced?

No doubt the Mayor will want to be there for the official opening but they could just open it without publicity and keep it low key. This happened with the DLR Woolwich extension.

Recent tradition has been for a "soft launch" a day or two before the official opening, often with public service starting on a Sunday

Not sure if it's been discussed already but was an answer given as to why PEDs have not been installed on the extension? Whilst PEDs (Platform Edge Doors) do offer a significant safety benefit, they are only installed on the Jubilee line because they form part of the tunnel ventilation system. Unless a similar ventilation system exists on the Northern line extension there is no requirement to fit PEDs.

I heard that sadly Celia Drummond died in January so she will be replaced on the Northern line because she didn’t record the new announcements for the Battersea extension. She will likely be replaced on the Jubilee too as there will be the new Crossrail announcements.
Who do you think will replace her?
I’m hoping it’s not Sarah Parnell, I do like her voice but it would be nice to have someone different. Maybe Emma Hignett? Or Elinor Hamilton?

That is devastating to hear, but yeah I rather have anyone other than Sarah imitations unless she managed to pull it off

Only the new recordings for the Battersea Extension and in due course the Elizabeth line interchanges have been done with a new voice. All the others will remain the same for the foreseeable future.

Will the new timetable start a week earlier, with empty running on the new line to help things settle in? IIRC it starts from the 19th. There has been trial running on some weekends over the last few weeks with something like 4tph running empty from Kennington. I’ve been off recently so am not really up to speed with exactly where they’re at, however the last I heard was it’s a pool of mainly Instructor Operators who will be doing the Battersea segment. I’ll add the caveat that this might have changed. Quite a few staff have been for a trip there and back on the cushions, for various reasons I haven’t been around at the right place/time, so feel a bit left out! There’s a few track walks taking place to familiarise station staff with various features including the two shafts. Regarding how things have gone, I haven’t heard the word shambles mentioned, so presumably the various test weekends have gone okay. To be fair this extension is so simple that there shouldn’t really be that much to go wrong. I suspect it might take a little while for service control to adjust to running the more complex service pattern.

I wish I could be in London for the opening of the new extension, but Covid has other ideas and I'm back at work now. I'll be there in spirit

Has the time on the 20th been confirmed for the first revenue train on the NLE yet?

Has the time on the 20th been confirmed for the first revenue train on the NLE yet? unless a soft-launch on Sunday doesn't happen, the first scheduled trains are: northbound 05.28 Battersea pfm.1 05.32½ Kennington pfm.1 to loop. southbound 05.42 Kennington pfm.2 05.46 Battersea pfm.1

Which suggests an official opening ceremony at an hour more amenable to the bigwigs. (After all, how would they get there for 0528?) Railway press offices have learned the lesson of the APT's (Advanced Passenger Train) inaugural run in 1981, which required journalists to be at Glasgow Central on a cold December morning an hour and a half before dawn. This was not calculated to endear the project to the reporters. (It's also possible that the motion sickness reported by several of the hacks was exacerbated by the lack of sleep, hurried (or no) breakfast after too much Scotch "hospitality" the night before, and the inability to see the horizon until well into the journey). Acronym explained.

Opening ceremonies do not have to coincide with first trains, there can be days or even weeks between them.
