London Underground has a back up system called UPS, which stands for Uninterrupted Power System (I think), IIRC this system is charged by the substations and only operates when the main power supply kicks out.
This system isn't enough to juice Trains or Signals, but it is enough to keep the necessary parts of a station (such as escalators and station lights) operational for a period of time.
I'm not too familiar with the UPS system, possibly somebody with more knowledge can explain it more technically and detailed than I can.
Hope that helps anyway.

The technical name for the UPS systems on the Underground is an 'Off Line Battery Inverter' or OLBI. It is basically a large battery.
The central line (and Baker St SCC) have UPS systems for their signalling equipment which I'm allegedly trained on.
And to be ever so slightly pedantic, UPS = Unninteruptible Power Supply.

Not long, I think an hour is about right. Baker St will only last for about 15 mins.

Baker St will only last for about 15 mins. Useful, particually if the failure is 16 minutes! lol

Uninteruptable Power Supply's are basically circuits without plugs.
All 'section 12' stations (LUL staff will know what I mean, but for joe public - basically stations underground) have Off Line Battery Inverters (OLBI). In the past, all of these types of stations had Two power supplies - one from LUL's own power station at Lots Road in Chelsea, and another from a local supply at the particular station concerned. When Lots Road power station closed, this left LUL with a problem. If the stations power supply was lost, people underground would be left in darkness. To overcome this, OLBI's were introduced. They basically have two requirements - to provide adequate lighting in all public areas of a station and they must do so for a minimum of One Hour. If a station has to rely on OLBI's for power, it must be evacuated and closed.
Trains have batteries, which are actually used more often than you might imagine. Every time a train passes over a rail gap, the leading cab looses all it's power (cue Solidbond to mention those MA indicator lights!). And you may notice that some, but not all lights go out in the carriages. The cab losing power would mean things like the deadman operating, stopping the train, which is not good. The batteries therefore keep the cab live. Some of the lights are also powered by the batteries for emergency situations which is why only some go out and not all of them.
Of course, like those in your walkman, you can bet they'll never last as long as you need them to !! ;D ;D

I may be wrong, but when i travelled on 7021, whenever that went over a gap, none of the saloon lights went out, so i believe a mod has been done so this happens. But yes it would be a bit tricky if you lost the deadman!

Worst case scenario if the control room lost all external power supplies, it gives you time to get trains into platforms and note their positions before the diagram goes blank.

Escalators are not run off the UPS, is only for emergency lighting, and comunications.

And of course, give us just enough time to boil one last kettle of water. In a crisis, nothing like a cuppa. Besides, once it all goes dark, what else are we to do but put our feet up and sip our tea ;D

Oh sorry, I forgot sparky hasn't taken you in there yet ;D ;D Since an incident a couple of New Year's Eves ago, Treats has stopped its previous good nature to those of us in Opsco uniforms at Baker Street. In return, following a stale sandwich around the same time, I too have stopped my good nature lining their till anymore. As for Costa's. I'll hold you to that
