Some 73TS double-ended units have been seen recently with covers over the couplers. I am reliably informed that the TOs have not had any particular information about these devices. Would anyone know why they are fitted and what the TO is supposed to do if the train has to be coupled to another in emergency?

Would anyone know why they are fitted and what the TO is supposed to do if the train has to be coupled to another in emergency? They are there to protect the Auto couplers from dirt and grease that may get onto them and damage them, probably as some or rather most of the dutch ovens have a habit of staying open. Apparently t/ops are aware they need to take them off if need be. I wouldnt like to swear by that though! They can also be used if the coupler is defective in some way. Hope that helps
