Why are the suicide pits on the Central line platforms at Mile End but not on the District/H&C platforms? I understand that in most cases the reason the SSLs don't have them is due to the differing construction of the tunnels, but I would have thought that Mile End station would be have been constructed as one building with the same method of construction for both lines?

Good Lord no !! Mile End was built long before the Central line got there and looked very much like Stepney Green does now prior to that. No suicide pits on SSL lines as the clearnaces are greater.

So the District Line part of Mile End (probably the met when it was built) was constructed by the 'cut and cover' method, so this begs the questions when the central line platforms were built did they extend the cut and cover or dig the tunnel like a deep level tube? Oliver

Oliver the Mile End Central was just built by extending the C&C 'sideways' so to speak. However having said that there were openings extant at that station long before the Central was extended. It a similar way to what you see at Stepney Green eastbound now. Although you can't see much there are quite large openings and cavities at Stepney Green Eastbound.

Talking about suicide pits - did you know that mile end eastbound west end of the platform has its own dedicated Samaritans direct phone line on the headwall ? this i believe was brought about by the amount of suicides that took place there in years gone by. The intention is that if someone is gonna jump then they may see the phone first and think twice - good idea if you ask me it saves lives doesn't it? well hopefully anyway. What do you think?

Oliver Mile End Station was built by the Whitechapel & Bow Railway Company, the station opened on 2nd June 1902.

I can't say I have ever noticed a phone there because I am always at the rear of the train when i get off (i get on at West Ruislip and hence at the rear and 'alight' at Mile End for Queen Mary, University of London. Might have to take a wonder down there
