Back in 1994 when BR was privatised and the TOUs formed, the stations along the LSWR diversionary route from East Putney to Wimbledon were transferred to LU.
Why was it decided then to keep Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury as NR stations and not as LU stations?

Why was it decided then to keep Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury as NR stations and not as LU stations? Probably because they were served by BR trains, unlike those on the Wimbledon road which were only served by District trains.

Probably because they were served by BR trains, unlike those on the Wimbledon road which were only served by District trains. That sounds like a good reason, although considering that the LU service has always (?) been so much more frequent than the NR service, it might have gone either way.

I always thought that the service was much the same. I used to go to the Cafe next to the Richmond platform at Kew, and it would (I think) always be a 313 then a District then another 313 and so on... Although I guess the LU service starts earlier etc?? Anyhow both Kew & Gunnersbury seem to be pretty well staffed most of the time, so I don't see the point in transferring them to LU.

There is a fairly complicated contract between LU and the TOC when LU uses a TOC station.
For example,
At Ealing Broadway, LU pay First, heaps of money, for ticket provisions and for access. In return , LU stipulate certain conditions, like ticket office opening times, staffing levels etc etc.
If First, for any reason, break these terms, e.g. close a ticket office due to no staff (or close a station), then LU will claim compensation.
So, it will be depend on the cash involved, plus any other costs that the TOC will incur. If the sums add up to be not worth it, then they'll enter discussions to off-load the station.
If memory serves, wasn't alot of work done on the Wimbledon branch stations? Especially at East Putney? AFAIK, NR/TOC's didn't want the cost of the repairs, for a Underground service, so the stations were sold for £1.

the trains on the east putney - wimbledon bit of the district only use the line for access to there maintenace depot at wimbledon park but metronet even own the infrastructure (signals - p-way) but AMEC do the work on a contract basis as the work as to be done to a NR standard which is different from LUL i.e the signalling is a 3 aspect arrangement and wired to a NR standard thus our own tech officers are not allowed to work on the equipment as we do not have the right cert's and that works vice versa too AMEC S & T's (same as lul tech officers) can not work on LUL signalling until the pass the correct courses the only work we do down that neck of the woods is the dot matrix equipment and the CSDE (Correct Side Door Enabling) equipment

As a question to this thread. Who controls the three aspect signals south of Putney Bridge? Earls Court or Wimbledon? Used to be that when you used a signal phone down there you spoke to Waterloo.

Wimbledon PSB controls all W-coded signals on the lower Wimbledon branch.

OneKea is correct... Waterloo is still controlled by Wimbledon PSB as well! I was quite amazed at the vast area of control Wimbledon PSB has! The last time I visited a year or so ago, I took some pics, although my camera is rubbish! Hopefully DD will take some trainees (and a hanger-on!) down there some time and get some much better pics.

the trains on the east putney - wimbledon bit of the district only use the line for access to there maintenace depot at wimbledon park It can also be used for SWT trains in service (non-stopping) when diverted for engineering work. This happened a few months ago, and the District had reduced service Putney Bridge - Wimbledon all weekend to free up the capacity for them.
