Only having alighted at Fenchchurch station twice. I get confused on the way out. Maybe, it sounds crazy for my railway experience, but the first time I discovered I was walking towards Tower Hill within minutes. The second time, I just followed everyone - used escalators and seemed to walk ages before arriving at Tower Hill tube station.
Where did I go wrong?

There is two exits from the station, one at the side, then the main entrance at the front. The side entrace that you can access from half way down the platforms brings you out at the side of the station, very close to Tower Hill. The other entrance gives you that little bit longer walk, as you mentioned.

Rob, sorry to say I am puzzled about this as with respect, the last time I was on Fenchurch Street, there were signs directing you. Have these now been removed? If you are into the LT&SR, there is now a forum for it, so pm me and I will send you the link. I started it up some weeks ago.

Understand the correct way now after this morning. I'm getting like some passengers now (not reading signs) after being off sick for 5 months. When you are caught in a crowd of hurrying passengers - you intend to go with the flow, until they give you some space to see where you are.
Not keen travelling up London in the rush-hour as a passenger. The 09.06 from Pitsea was only a four car - had to stand up all the way to Fenchchurch Street. It was too late considering to change at Barking or West Ham for the District, because the train didn't stop until it arrived at Fenchurch Street. From Pitsea to St James Park took just over the hour, changing at Tower Hill.

Seriously, have you lived there long? I had a good friend in Bowers Gifford until a few weeks ago and he was found dead in his bungalow. I originate from Laindon and left there in 1964, but still visit as much as I can.

Lived in Pitsea for just over one year. Don't know Pitsea that well, excepting for the market and Tesco's. (not much there) Sorry to hear about your friend.
