. . . and allow customers to get feedback. (Like the 86TS - the green train won - became the 92TS) We gave 'feedback' regarding the seats on the '09 mock-up at Euston, but nothing seemed to be done!

As at current information, it will be 3 x S7s before the S8s are finished. Then the remaining S7s will be rolled out. The next working timetable on the H&C (December) will contain 2 trains which will both become S7 worked (in customer service) during the life of the timetable (so before next summer). So does this mean that these 2 S7s are due to be delivered soon?

The number applies to the number of cars per train rather than the year of construction in this case and is a break from the traditional numbering system. I wouldn't say it was a break from the traditional numbering system. It is in fact a perfectly traditional way of denoting stock which is of the same type but comes in different lengths. A 1962 timetable in front of me as I type this refers to A4 and A8 (and P6) for the type of stock used on each service.

I am guessing the plan to start introducing S7 stock before all the S8 stock is working has been dropped then? I did hear that after the first 40 S8 were in service, the S7 delivery would start so there would be a fair few S7s for the olymipics? As at current information, it will be 3 x S7s before the S8s are finished. Then the remaining S7s will be rolled out. The next working timetable on the H&C (December) will contain 2 trains which will both become S7 worked (in customer service) during the life of the timetable (so before next summer). That's good news To be honest I will be glad to see the C-Stocks go,not really a fan of them

Me too, the C Stock are fast deteriorating. Even more so than A Stock dare I say? Now, we need prjb to counter our comments. Where is prjb by the way?

I'd rather ride a C69/77 stock train any day! Agreed, my first experience of an A stock years ago as a child scared the life out of me, must have been on a carriage with one of those horrible winding motors.

Don't get me wrong, I'd have an A stock over a C stock!
What is space like for stabling C stock at the moment? Now Farringdon and Edgware Road are lost, along with some of the triangle(?) sidings where do C stock stable? Will shortage of space affect them more when it comes to disposals I wonder?

We still have 2 spaces at Farringdon.
All the C-stocks (both District and H&C) are stabled at various locations around the SSR: Parsons Green, Triangle Sidings, Lillie Bridge, Barking Sidings, Aldgate, Moorgate, Farringdon, Hammersmith depot and platforms. Between them all, there is enough room at present.
However, once work begins in earnest on Hammersmith depot, and once we start stabling S7s, then things will get a bit tighter. Space in Hammersmith depot will drop by about a third.
I have a feeling that when it comes to getting rid of them, some may take final journeys to Neasden, Acton or maybe Upminster. Nothing firm has been mentioned as yet.

I'd rather ride a C69/77 stock train any day! I concur, I'd still have the poorly C69/77/08 stock instead of the S Stock. Is this right what I've heard, that some of the S Stocks dropped out during the heatwave earlier?

They are still dropping out, but that's another story Thanks for the update on the stabling Metcontrol. I went through Farringdon the other day and thought looking at the state of it if anything could stable there! Acton would be a good place for disposal, much like the 67s exit.

Well, the S8 was introduced way before the S7, like the 96TS way before the 95TS. (Except that none of them are more modern than the other) Zero to do with this thread, but 95 are technically more rather modern than 96. 96 stock have GTO traction packs; GTO is obsolete. 95 stock have IGBT traction packs; IGBT is still the current standard. GTO was obsolete by about year 2000, those extra build of 96 stock took a lot of serious resource by Alstom to retro-manufacture some new GTO packs to maintain compatibility. They were - so I am told - the last new GTO packs made for any "big railway". A moderator might decide to move this posting to elsewhere, if so I hope the posting that caused me to write this one goes with it, else it makes no sense on its own. -- Nick

What's the likelihood of C stock being removed from Northwood?

Unlikely, although it would give people a chance to see them go! My money would be on Acton or Upminster. I wonder if a scrap manufacturer has been tendered/decided yet. That may affect where the cars are decomissioned.

C stock is cleared though for a tiny bit of NR? Perhaps a naieve assumption but at least it gives precident for them being in gauge elsewhere with the same structural gauge? If thats the case could they not just be removed by rail? Seems a bit crazy to not make use of it for something that would most likely fit...

I expect that the C Stock would go from Acton, as the 67s went from there to Booth's and Eastleigh

Wasn't 5606 scrapped in the 1990s for whatever reason? I've been led to believe 5505 became the current 5606 following repairs after 7/7?

Yes, and yes.
5595-6595 is the unit at Acton, withdrawn, as far as I am aware.

Yes this is correct - the original 5606-6606 was fitted with prototype traction equipment by Kiepe (similar to that subsequently used on D/1983 stocks). By the 1990s this had become life-expired and with spares difficult to obtain. The unit was withdrawn and not included in the refurbishment, it was scrapped from RFS Doncaster in 1993, though the exact location of scrapping does not seem to be recorded anywhere. (Anyone know any more?). The current unit 5606 is the original 5505, the reason for this renumbering is well documented.

Just to tidy that up a little, the D stock has a GEC camshaft equipment, not Kiepe. The 1983TS did indeed have Kiepe equipment much of it very similar, packaged by Brush Electrical Machines. I'm fairly sure the original 5606 was cut up actually at Hammersmith depot. Not sure about 6606.

The original 5606-6606, withdrawn 31/1/91 -
Hammersmith to Ruislip - both cars (between L52-B583-B584-L53) 18/5/93.
Thence to RFS Doncaster (same formation - by rail!) same day "for spares removal and disposal". Quite what, when and how the "disposal" took place, I don't know.

I don't think the C' Stock needs to go by road because, as far as I know, they're a bit narrower than the A' Stock. I wonder what precludes TfL from hiring locomotives to shunt the C' Stock to the scrap yard?
