In the new timetable, train 171 is an inter peak stabler in Upminster depot. When stabling, it runs to Barking in service, then empty to Upminster. I find this odd, since S stock now run regularly to Upminster in passenger service. In fact, the two late evening H&C trains run all the way to Upminster in service.
What is even more strange is 171's first afternoon journey. It runs empty ALL the way from Upminster to Hammersmith before entering service.
Does anybody in the know have any ideas about these workings?

The reason 171 runs empty from Barking is that the following train, train 1, is two minutes behind and uses the same platform at Upminster - the driver would not be able to properly detrain and clear the platform at Upminster by themselves within that time limit........but at Barking we have dedicated detrainment staff on the platform that can have the train emptied and on the move within 2 minutes Train 5 also goes out of service at Barking (@ 1950) and runs empty to Upminster for exactly the same reason. Why does 171 run empty to Hammersmith? Well it runs straight to 24 road and then reverses via the depot - much easier to do without the hassle of detraining at Goldhawk Road which is not only silly in itself but also for which there is no time allowance in the timetable to achieve (much like the Upminster situation).

Thanks. But why not stable 171 at Hammersnith between the peaks? 171 172 and other paths are used to swap S7 trains between the District and H&C so that trains can get back to the heavy maintenance depots of Ealing Common and Upminster. Hammersmith is currently being downgraded to sidings status only.

Is a modicum of common sense applied so that if (for instance) the train 2 minutes behind is cancelled, the train previously terminating at Barking is extended to Upminster?
