Night Tube trial commences this evening on the Piccadilly Line. Not quite sure how things will go at the moment on the basis the line is running an emergency timetable. Will report back tomorrow.

Is it wise to start running the night service when the day service is severely disrupted to the point of not being usable? Wouldn't it exacerbate shortages of trains if those running overnight have to be taken out during the day for works?

Haven't heard anything official but it seemed to go well enough. Plenty of late running that settled down once we just had 21 trains in service. A bit of turning short to bring things back on time and loads of volunteers about providing us with loads of potential problems, vomit, PEA's, falling over on platform, suspect packages etc. The biggest issue as I anticipated was driver fatigue. Having not driven a full shift for nearly 4 months due to union restrictions, I knew it was going to be tough. My final trip from Heathrow to Arnos Grove was tough as I felt drained.
Although I was OK, I heard that in the final stages of the trial, there were quite a few SPADS. Will look on Heartbeat when I get in tonight to see what they were all about.

Does anyone know if there were "quite a few" spads. If so, and it continues, this will rapidly lead to a shortage of drivers.

Quite a few SPADS is never good, it's like a big flashing beacon that brings the hounds hunting. Can understand them on a test trial for new extension test track running where signals bob (continuously change colour aspect from red to green and back) all over the place, but can't see them taking an 'well they're all new drivers' approach. And if they take a lenient approach just to keep trains running, then it'll set plenty of comparators for future LDI/CDI (disciplinaries) and that won't sit well with Office for Rail Regulation (ORR). Out of interest, what were the union restrictions?

Yes, and at a time of forced displacements looming, this is a trump card to stay at a depot whilst others who have been there years will be moved.

There is a new Night Tube map out. I picked up a copy at Warren Street. It seems to be the third edition and it has.a different cover from the first and second editions.

I bet black-taxi drivers and minicab drivers aren't at all impressed with night tubes.

I bet black-taxi drivers and minicab drivers aren't at all impressed with night tubes. Well, cabs still go to thousands of places in London and surrounding areas that the tube doesn't so there'll always be a market for them, and they've always successfully competed with night buses so I doubt it'll bother them unduly.

Depends which ones. I'm sure the companies at places like Loughton are raking it in.

The cab firms at the ends of lines will have lost out as they have lost the sleepers market.

I met one of the union reps as I was booking off last night at 23:11, I asked what he was doing there so late, he explained that one of the Night Tube TOps had a LDI (Local Disciplinary Interview) and they can only be held during the night shifts. He didn't mind too much, he was booked to do an early turn on Saturday but would miss it because of the 12 hour rest period. I suppose the TOSM conducting the LDI would also get overtime as they never work nights.
Apparently the same holds for Corrective Action Plans, if a Night Tube TOp needs to be monitored by an IOp then the IOp has to work Friday and Saturday nights. Another reason for me not to become an IOp!!!
Just asked my own rep, he says that if Night Tubers need CAPs then they're going to have to work "normal" shifts

FYI, London Underground, appearing before Epping Forest DC the Monday before Christmas, stated publicly there was no intention to extend NT beyond Loughton

The first official paper from LU on the implementation of the Night Tube to reach the public domain is in the papers for next week's Customer Service and Operational Performance Panel meeting. content.tfl.gov.uk/csopp-20170302-part-1-item08-night-tube-implementation.pdfNo massive surprises in there. Demand confirmed as higher than forecast. Lots of work done and more planned on controlling noise and vibration. A number of further reviews and studies over the coming months once more reliable data has emerged as to the underlying use of the service. This includes the economic impact of the service, impact on the Night Bus network and also crime levels.

In terms of duties, what is the earliest time that a Night Tube driver books on? What about the latest they book off?

From what I can make out, it really only affects the Piccadilly Line (maybe Northern). Trainees cannot jump over T/Op's that are on waiting lists for other lines so that pretty much discounts the Victoria, Central and Jubilee as there are big waiting lists for those lines. Certainly on the Piccadilly Line, many of the Night Tube drivers would willingly go full time with a proviso that they continue to cover Night Tube duties until their place has been back filled. I fully understand that the unions would be opposed to this as the two grades have to be kept separated and it wouldn't be particularly easy to schedule but it's a way to satisfy the existing staff and help support the day service.
