I’m sure those of us who are directly affected by the work will post as soon as anything is confirmed officially. As far as I’m aware Edgware Road cabin is still closing at the end of traffic on August 9; I’ll be the penultimate signaller.

Thanks Jack. Edgware Road, was quite unnerving to enter platform 2 over 22mph with a train in platform 1. Edgware Road is technically an open air station - does it experience slippery rails in inclement weather? Also, will automated trains be allowed to enter platform 2 whilst another train is *leaving* platform 1? (stationary so that passengers can benefit from a hurried cross-platform interchange is a different issue) I ask these questions with thoughts of an arriving train sliding on slippery rails and going a little too far before coming to a halt.

there are not many trees around Edgeware Rd, so shouldn't be much of an issue. Wet rails alone do not cause problems it is contaminants on them which do.

Damp rails certainly cause issues on the Central line, with and without leaves.

In 2013 Edgware Road was fitted with VSS Variable Speed Signage and additional trainstops, as some overlaps could be compromised. This reduced the speed which trains could enter the platforms with conflicting moves ahead. This was installed for the forthcoming longer S Stock in manual driving.
The driver is shown an illuminated target speed on the approach to the platform and the trainstop will lower at that speed, a second illuminated sign will then show the optimal speed for the second and third trainstops. If no conflicting move the first sign will show "20". Drivers of C Stock were simply shown "C" on the second illuminated sign and had to reduce speed accordingly to clear the second and third trainstops.
The VSS equipment is not used in CBTC.

Yes, but at a very slow speed in a similar manner to that enforced today using trainstops and Variable Speed Signage.

]In 2013 Edgware Road was fitted with VSS Variable Speed Signage and additional trainstops, as some overlaps could be compromised. The VSSs were commissioned over the period 26-30 December 2011; and was not so much about compromised overlaps but more being able to accommodate S7 trains. The berths at Edgware Road were optimised for a 95m C stock train and to fit a 117.5m S7 meant the signals had to be repositioned. However, this would mean there was no means of providing an adequate overlap beyond the stating signals which meant that either parallel arrivals and departures had to be inhibited or additional speed control in the platforms was needed to enforce the available overlap with a parallel departure. An approaching train is given a target speed based on other moves happening around it; if no EB departure is set and a long overlap is available then a 20mph speed is shown on the VSS and conflicting moves are inhibited until the arriving train is proved stationary in the platform. If a conflicting departure has been set then the approaching train will be shown a lower speed and has to enter the platform under speed control. More info here.

The 4LM Project have advised the cancellation of Signalling System Commissioning works for SMA 010/2 on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, 9th, 10th and 11th August 2019.
The 4LM Project will instead continue with Signalling System Operation Proving in SMA 01/02 on this weekend.

Does anyone have any info on how last weekends testing went? Well it looks like it was not successful as some one would have provided an answer by now.

You may be correct but it's also quite conceivable that it may or may not have worked, either partially or completely and that those with the pertinent information you seek have either not had time to post, are prevented by their job from posting what could amount to sensitive information or are just choosing to wait until they're better informed. 👍

That’s not an accurate or healthy assumption to make. Many of us who have ‘inside knowledge’ value our jobs ahead of posting information into the public domain. As this, and other threads, show, District Dave has long been a place to get accurate, firm information about various Underground developments once it is more than just gossip or hearsay (as we see on other forums, for instance). This includes when things don’t go to plan, and indeed we’ve been the first forum to have details of some of those weekends. As it is, there’s now an ‘official’ news release on the LU intranet, so I’m happy to report forwards that everything went well over the weekend. There were a few niggles here and there but that’s to be expected with any new systems, particularly as this introduces a much larger area of railway than the fairly basic Hammersmith to Latimer Road section. The plan remains to commission SMA 1 and 2 (Latimer Road/Paddington Circle/Finchley Road to Euston Square) over the weekend of 31 August/1 September.

(On a serious note we still have almost daily stock and crews taking place. They're generally for depot requirements nowadays rather than defective ATO kit - of course, Hammersmith is now only a sidings over a maintenance depot. It isn't possible to get every train onto an appropriate stabler, so often trains are reformed onto Districts to get them somewhere vaguely in the direction of Ealing Common depot - likely involving a second reform at Earl's Court.)

Just to add my personal thoughts - we are very fortunate to have LU staff as members of this forum who are prepared to share their knowledge. None of them have any obligation to do so.
Good to see things moving forward, although there is potentially a lot more to go wrong when the next sections go live.
Out of interest, are they keeping the legacy signal boxes open for a while after conversion, just in case?

Hammersmith (OZ) remained staffed for two weeks following closure; the expectation is that the same will occur with Edgware Road (OP) and subsequent cabins/signalling centres.

What year? I omitted that bit on purpose - you can't trip me up that easily! What makes you think the stock & crew was for an ATO issue? As MoreToJack says, stock is often swapped about to get it to a certain place for many varied reasons. I was recently involved in a such a manoeuvre; I picked up a train at Barking eastbound which was reformed into my train from a Hammersmith & City working.....it turned out it had previously been stock & crewed * at Edgware Road from a Circle line working.....and it was stock & crewed * again at Upminster with a stabler - all because Upminster depot required the train. So it got there from the circle line via several changes of identity. * a stock & crew is where two drivers swap trains, usually at a terminus or side by side on an island platform, with the trains assuming the set number and destination that each driver is working. If they're in service, the passengers swap with the drivers, unless both trains are going to the same destination.

That was quoted by the train op to advise the passengers why the Wimbledon train is now going to Hammersmith. The actual reason was “ defective automatic train “
