I was at South Ken earlier, put my oyster ticket on the reader, went through, and literally, one of the barriers just fell off! It hit my ankle/ leg and I carried on walking away, after looking around quite puzzled.
I am very skinny and had a small bag (which was pretty much empty - a small reading book and a few papers). I certainly didn't do this intentionally.
How often does this happen and will I get in trouble :s

...will I get in trouble :s For it breaking? No. People may well think less of you though for not taking the paddle which fell off to a member of staff and/or reporting the problem.

40 lashes for hooliganism?
But seriously, if it was not your fault then hopefully not.
If something hitting your leg caused pain or even damaged your skin (abrasion, bleeding?) then maybe it should have been reported. It may not be that you need medical treatment at the time but if complications arise at a future date having a record of the event might be useful.

I worked as a Station Assistant from December 1997 until August 2002 and I've never seen or heard of a UTS gate paddle falling off even when someone had forced their way through the gates.
I doubt if you are in any way to blame for the gate but I believe you could be subject to a £1000 fine for blatant misuse of the word "literally".......

I suspect any such fine will be equal to a fine imposed for improper usage of the ellipsis. I have written to TfL through the enquiry website system. I will post a summary of any reply I get.

I only did it because I didn't want people to think she was thick and try to get one over on her. Anyway, I did stop eventually when she angrily turned to me and said "Every time you correct my grammar, I love you just a little bit fewer."

And I think that will be enough about grammar - back on topic please.

Probably the gate had been damaged by the non payers pushing through time and time again. After a while it weakens the gate and they will break. You were just unlucky enough for it to actually, literally, break as you passed through. That is what any member of staff would assume so don't worry about it.

I’ve only just seen this thread. I’ve read the Station logbook for South Kensington. it says that Gate 41 has a faulty paddle which has had a repair job raised in consequence.

The reply I got said that there were no issues reported: I would assume there should be some agreement between what the station staff say and what is written in the station logbook?

How old are those gates? Judging from the pictures I've seen of the gateline I'm assuming they're the older (and more noisy) ones.
