Following discussion in the thread about the May 2018 tube map, I've uploaded my collection of digital tube maps to www.sucs.org/~cmckenna/maps/tube/ Currently there are the following maps - the current map is not included as it is easy to download it from the TfL website. The recent ones are there in both pdf and png format (the latter though usually just the map frame without the index), the earlier ones are not necessarily duplicates. 2004-03 2006-08(1) 2006-08(2) 2006-11 2007-12 2008-01 2008-03 2008-10 2009-12 2010-05 2011-03 2011-04 2011-09 2011-12 2012-05 2012-06 2012-12 2013-05 2013-09 2013-12 2014-05 2014-12 2015-05 2015-12 2016-06 2016-12 2017-03 2017-05 2017-07 2017-12 2018-02 2018-03 (Mod edit: Post stickied as a useful reference for past, present and future! ~MoreToJack)

Many thanks Chris, this sort of mundane thing is exactly the sort of thing that isn't kept on record and then lost forever - I'm sure future historians may stumble upon these and be thankful. That said, I'm getting 403 errors (Forbidden - You don't have permission to access ... on this server) for the 2009-12 map and earlier - everything since seems to work though.

I find this site very useful too but it hasn't been updated since 2002. I think it compliments your list well.

Quick, Chris M, hide in the Ecuadorian embassy! If not possible, a certain country in southern Europe will provide safe haven.

Thank you so much! I love how this collection traces the network since I've arrived in London in 2006 - until now.

howda62 has sent me a copy of a map they downloaded in early August 2000, which I've now added to the collection provisionally dated as 2000-07. It looks to be the very first TfL map - or rather the last LRT map from circa November or December 1999 with a TfL copyright notice added at the bottom. www.sucs.org/~cmckenna/maps/tube/2000-07.jpg

Thanks for this. I's great that you have older maps archived. Some might find it mundane but it could be valuable to future historians. This is what history is about in my opinion. It's not just about wars, battles or kings and queens (although these are important) but also about society and everyday life. I think LU history should be on the school curriculum.

I've spend some time this evening trawling through the Internet Archived saved versions of the TfL (and very end of LRT) websites, downloading many more old versions of tube maps. As I've been doing it manually I don't claim to have found everything there is, but I've done a reasonable job. I've added all the new ones to the archive on my website linked in the first post. The earliest map is now from circa November 1999, and there is at least one map for every year since then.

While looking for something else, I stumbled across a freedom of information request listing every edition of the pocket tube map from August 1997 to June 2016 www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/past_tube_maps_2 Based on that, I've had another look at the Internet Archive and managed to find two more maps, 2008-05 and 2016-01. I've also found that I had dated two maps incorrectly 2011-09 should be 2011-08 and 2012-05 should be 2012-06, both now renamed on the site.

After a bit of inspiration about where to look, I've managed to add two more early digital maps to the collection. One dated December 1996 at the latest, the other no later than December 1997.

Thank you for these: There is a version of the DLR route map which doesn't have the text about things changing in January 2000. Unfortunately I don't think the large version of the map is available. [/div] original link:
That's from an earlier period of 1999 as its during the closure to connect the Lewisham extension to the original network at Crossharbour. CULG gives that as January to November 1999. These are different maps - the gif map has the connections at Tower Gateway and Limehouse as "c2c" the pdf has them as "LTS rail". Wikipedia tells me that rebranding happened in May 2000. The change here is to using the roundel. This change happened in 2004 according to the only date I've found, but the map was saved by the Internet Archive in March 2003 (and has interchanges at Greenwich at Lewisham with "Connex", who lost their franchise in November 2003. These are dated March 2003 and November 2005. That's interesting as it clearly dates from before the Waterloo & City line transferred to TfL in April 1994. The first of these is dated April 1996. The second isn't dated but was saved in August 2004 but looks to be based on the September 2003 map (the City Airport branch appeared under construction in May 2004), it also has step-free information on it in a far less disruptive and more informative manner than the present map does! This is very similar (but not identical) to one I have dated 2005-01. There is a version dated 05.05 so it is earlier than that. I've added it as dated 2004-09. The pdf seems to be the same as the 2004-03 version I have but with the key in a different place. I'll put it as 2004-07 latest as that the date it was saved. The jpg is an earlier version. It's identical to the 2002-03 zones map I have in PDF other than slightly muted colours and station names in blu erather than black. I've saved this as 2002-03 as well. The 2003-01 map has warnings about weekend closures of the SSL Baker Street to Liverpool street. This looks to be the 2003-09 map I think. Yes, this is 2004. I'm not including the in-car diagrams in this archive at the momemnt. I'll see about adding them in the future though.
These are dated as 2002 version 2. This is interesting. The DLR is shown as running from Poplar to Beckton but not through to Bank/Tower Gateway, which represents the period from 1994-03-28 to 1995-07-31. Aldwych and Ongar are open, meaning it's before 1994-09-30. The map I have that I've dated 1995-01 (I don't know how I didated that though) shows the DLR running all the way through. The Bakerloo line is shown only to Queen's Park, which might represent the 10-day period at the end of October 1999 when the Bakerloo line was cloesd north of Queens Park for engineering work, but it would be odd to produce a map just for that, when the line was cut back in the 1980s it was only to Stonebridge Park not Queen's Park, CULG has no changes of note on the Bakerloo line in 1994. I don't know whether it is official or not and have run out of time I can spend looking for now. I'll update the archive later today.

Hi Chris, thanks for the swift response. I apologise if some of the maps were indeed repeats. Its hard to tell. I've gone through the FOI requests as well. I had already added all the links I found for the car diagrams before reading your post so apologies for that! Some of these stretch a little the definition of what should be included, but I've tried to move the more obvious inclusions near the front! I also put the ones which perhaps aren't going to be considered into a reference one below, but yeah its entirely up to you! I'm not sure if these maps meet your criteria either, but these are all the ones I've found from "whatdotheyknow.com". Thanks

What was frustrating is that the other images (for other areas of the map) failed to load. The rest of the webpage loaded properly! This is one of the reasons I tried to look on railway sites - in case they put the tube map on their websites as well. Couldn't find anything though sadly.
Ha! If it is a matter of time, I am more than happy to help with this. I am about 40% of the way through decompiling, renaming (by date) and reorganising the car diagrams from TFL's current website. Basically I download the diagrams for each line, split the x-page document into x single paged pdf documents, and then rename manually all the documents by checking the date listed in each one on the bottom right. I don't bother to verify that the text date listed on the bottom right in the images, matches the extremely small (but still viewable if you zoom really close) numbered date listed just above the text date. This would take much longer and is probably uncessary - TfL are unlikely to have made a mistake and you need a consistent way of labelling the dates of the car diagrams anyway.
I'll probably finish this very soon. I had a look through the car diagrams on the FOI requests. Many seem to have faint blue lines, I think to show where to cut the poster to size. So these are slightly larger. If I remember correctly, a few had part numbers on them but I don't remember if they had the faint blue lines or not. Regarding the unofficial map, I found it [ here]. The author calls it "Central London Map" but he doesn't put "official next to it", either because he doesn't know, or indeed it is unofficial. Note he does not put "official" next to the jle website, which was a website designed by the original JLE team***. From the original image link, it seems someone has uploaded the image to a hosting company called "Odyssey".
When you get the time, I definitely recommend (for fun) having a look at a [ website] in the archives that I came across. From this link, you can see several things: 1) The website was created by someone called "John Francis Rowland" and he has created many wonderful unofficial maps. If anyone knows him, he may be able to give more information about that "unofficial" tube map listed above. 2) It provides evidence of an early version of a geographically accurate tube map posted on the London Transport website, which sadly [ doesn't load]. 3) From this website, you can access another website which shows an [ unofficial map] of how many stations had step free access. Quite interesting to see how far (or not) we have progressed since then! 4) This website has many links to other websites, with lots of interesting historic transport photos.
I also thought this was pretty cool. TfL had a [ webpage] on ghost stations!
*** In case anyone has any objections regarding the jle website, (Jubilee Line extension and Aldwych images), if you go [ here], there is clearly a link to the jle website. When you visit the jle website homepage, it was created by "Clayton Delamere Ltd." Visiting earlier in the archive of the site [ here], you can see that the site was designed by the team delivering the project.

Sorry to bother you again Chris.
Just an update of the Aldwych map: Mornington_Crescent closed on the 23 October 1992, only opening in 1998 [ wiki]. As you said, Waterloo and City Line transferred to LU in 1 April 1994 [ wiki]: From the legend provided with the map [ link], this must mean the map dates between 1992 and 1994. According to [ this] website, there can only be three tube maps which it could have been: March 1992 November 1992 January 1993 December 1993
May 1994
If you look at ebay pictures of the Nov 1992 map [ link] and Jan 1993 [ link], they both have the text below in their legends, which is not present in the legend we have. This leads me to believe that it is likely a map based on the Dec 1993 tube map which does not have the message [ link]. Curiously though, in the tube maps, there are two legends, one on the bottom left and one on the bottom right. The authors of the archived website seemed to have merged the two legends, but left out the specific details about the station opening times. They presented this merged legend as a separate image on the website. On the thumbnail of the map located on the archived website*, only one legend is visible, the one on the left. Perhaps this was a poster then? *The thumbnail of the entire map from the archive is located [ here] but is sadly so small that it is almost imperceptible.

PS: I cannot verify these because they were obtained from an old personal website but I assume they are official: Line Management Maps (2002-08): filebin.net/hatqw6i9q4nwhiot

There are other maps including high frequency services, toilet guides, bicycles maps which I've omitted because they don't appear on your list, but just let me know and I'll upload them too. I've gone through numerous archival links over many weeks, so is unlikely I've missed any, although I cannot be sure. Everything is an official document unless stated otherwise. Hopefully all these maps prove to be useful for everyone, both for enjoyment and as a historical archive.
