Due to engineering work this weekend 13/14 October 2018 the district line is operating a service from Upminster to Edgware Road via High Street Kensington .
Do the drivers change over at any point and is this the first time this service has operated ?

Do the drivers change over at any point and is this the first time this service has operated ? District line drivers will drive the section Upminster - South Kensington where a Circle/Hammersmith and city Train operator will take over the train and take it to Edgware Road and bring it back down to SOuth kensington before handing the train back over to a District driver. This happened during the Christmas shutdown 2016. |

In my day Parsons Green (presumably Earls Court now) crews used to work some Circle Line services on a Sunday so had the route knowledge.

Only the Acton and Earls court drivers have the route knowledge between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road, both Barking and Upminster drivers do not cover that part of the district line as they have no duties with that route. That still didn’t stop there being a dispute back in 2013 with industrial action having been carried out and T/Ops refusing to take trains to and from the Met platforms and even refusing to change over with T/Ops at Moorgate or Gt Portland St who would. www.rmtlondoncalling.org.uk/files/cross_line_working_dispute.pdf |

On the Central West Ruislip crews weren't signed for Woodford to Hainault,that was in 62TS days,may have changed since then.

It was more to do with them not being stock trained on the 1960 stock. Slightly off topic, but back in the day only Loughton crews were signed off for Epping to Ongar. Back on topic, there were rumours that Upminster and Barking crews were going to be trained from Earls Court to Edgware Road. |

If there was a legitimate W->E reversible route via the terminus at HSK then it would make absolute sense for East End drivers to know that route. Without that I can understand why they don't "do" HSK as it's busy with Wimbleware and Circle Line.... |

Of course back in D78 stock days, a train wrong routed to High Street from Gloucester Road would reverse in platform 2, then on to Earl's Court and a Western Terminal. Then it would have to make the same detour on its eastbound trip to end up back 'right way round' since D78 stock had specific 'A' and 'D' ends. With S stock they are reversible so it doesn't matter.
Are T/Ops trained for that route? Maybe only West end District?

We haven't trained the Edgware Road branch to new east end drivers for about a year now. As you rightly say, initially new drivers to a depot will be in the pool and are therefore required to be trained on the whole line. However the reality is that if an Edgware Road trip needs covering and the only spare driver on the line is an east end one, a west end driver on a "mainline" working would be pulled off their duty and that in turn would be covered by the spare east end driver. So it is now District line policy that drivers transferring into Upminster & Barking are not trained on the Edgware Road branch. This gives us a much needed week back in training time to get other important moves done; the majority being far away at the west end of the line. East end I/O's still maintain their Edgware Road knowlege though. **We do currently have a special upgrade pool at each depot to cover the CBTC training and these drivers are trained on the whole line regardless of home depot ** |
