Some clips of effective line controlling too, turning trains short to fill gaps in the other direction. Such a shame that this is so rarely done nowadays.

I hope our younger members and readers aren't too shocked to find documentary evidence before their very eyes that it was possible to run an underground network without apps, Oyster or night Tubes and with guards and a station cat-was he part of the Northern Line Information Service, too? Looked the knowledgeable sort. Only pang of regret I felt was the first sign of political correctness at 8:13-8:17- scrambled eggs at breakfast, for heaven's sake!

What I love about the video is that it encapsulates the Northern line as I knew it when I was growing up. Yes it was dirty, unreliable and neglected, but it was MY Northern line and it had character. It’s all too clinical nowadays!

It's a very interesting watch (I've watched it lots of times) and it's amazing how it looked familiar, yet so different. I was born in 1990 so don't really remember those days of the tube, even though I was on it as a kid. I have to say though I do prefer the 1995 stock to the 1959 though, but that's just me. BTW I wish tube stations now had a station cat, at least he would keep the mice at bay

My local station has a cat, he even shares a name with me. Huddersfield station also has a cat: Click/tap here if embedded tweet fails to display.

I'm not sure the Oyster system could cope with cat rate fares!

I'm not sure the Oyster system could cope with cat rate fares! Indeed, could be an issue clawing back revenue . . .

If that was in London, would the cat flap have an Oyster reader? Don't cats ride for free (I'm sure they think so) or do they have "mouser" concessionary cards? (side note- friend has a cat flap that's unlocked by the cat's microchip, other cats can't come in and eat the food)
