I was sent this by a colleague: I've had a quick look around and asked some of the other staff and it doesn't seem to be a repetition of anything we've done (at least recently) so with the caveat that I don't have the answers and some of them might be versions of other more well known clues, here's a lockdown Tube quiz which I hope some folk might enjoy
75 clues, each of which is a station on the London Underground and DLR. For clarification, these are all stations appearing on the London Underground map, including the Docklands Light Railway, but NOT including the Overground or other lines not operated by London Underground. 1 An angry monarch 2 A wet lavatory 3 A female monarch may be laid to rest here 4 Nelly with a fortress 5 University big top 6 Tall entrance 7 Do rabbits live here? 8 Stretched circle 9 Where dogs make a noise 10 A very tall hairdo 11 Scouse road 12 Not amused 13 Store up effectively 14 The station with wings and a halo 15 Honking house of prayer 16 Stop your car like a king 17 The street where Spurs fans are on trial 18 An enormous home with a regular home 19 The monarch’s acorns grow here 20 Where tulips grow and children play whilst wearing clogs 21 Pure coloured prayer hall 22 Sounds like a grand place for a tea party 23 A gallant man on horseback owns a watery crossing 24 The top of that entrance looks both rounded and expensive 25 Susan, Margaret, Vanessa, Rachel, Abigail, Melanie and Gabriella have the same parents 26 Where blackboard writing implements grow 27 The station that will keep you warm if you are opposite west 28 Roger Bannister got there in under four minutes 29 If London is completely covered in snow 30 An East Midlands place with four corners 31 If you arrived on the rock five minutes after you were supposed to get there 32 Conceal the swings and roundabouts right at the edge 33 Perimeter clothing 34 Do British Airways aeroplanes park on this street? 35 The final resting place for Arsenal supporters 36 Beeping street 37 A playing area next to an area of trees 38 A large amount of building blocks 39 Sheep farmers shrubbery 40 Applaud a pig upwards 41 The green area where the Tower’s birds stand trial 42 The crossing where the Duke of Cambridge has his own space 43 The person who prepares trouser legs for shortening 44 How the wedding dress maker created the bride’s head dress 45 Oh no, the bonfire is too close to that tree and the acorns are on fire! 46 Is Israel’s first female Prime-Minister covered in limes? 47 A playing area taking up the same amount of space as Big Ben! 48 By the edge of the sea there’s a hole in the ground 49 A tin with a doll in 50 What the witch does to people as she makes them into frogs 51 Apologetic door openers 52 The fish egg bell sounds between the mountains 53 Just how much money does a Die Hard actor have? 54 Marital head covering for a ‘Friend’ 55 Don’t put your cap here in church 56 Camouflaged fence material 57 Blonde cut-off branch 58 Drinkable maple leaf 59 How Elizabeth does things 60 Clucking professor in the middle 61 Comfortable shoes sheltering from the wind 62 Unsteadily moving narrow hilltop joins with a soaking rock 63 A card game for golfers proposing? 64 Superman’s alter ego powered 65 Applaud a frequently seen pig 66 A poorly behaved and heavy youth 67 A hole dug by the edge of the sea 68 Calcutta perhaps? 69 Fill a rifle with wet soil 70 Note that Plymouth, Totnes and Paignton are in a line 71 George IV perhaps? 72 Line up if you want to see the flowers! 73 If the crossing had been afflicted by the first plague 74 ‘Me and My Girl’s’ 1937 trek up the compass 75 Lose your footing in a paddy field

I got 46 of them of a first pass through. I'll have to think a bit harder about the others.

Do you want answers in the thread or by PM? Maybe let's give it until Friday at 4pm before anyone puts any answers in the thread and that'll get rid of the easy ones. The harder ones might be more fun - perhaps with people giving alternative clues to allow members to try to solve as many as possible themselves?

I reckon I've got about 61 after the first run through, but there are a couple I'm not sure of. I'll have to go through again when I'm more awake. #36 is particularly bugging me!

So far I've got 74, with four marked as suspect (42, 54, 56, 73).
Any extra clues for:
42 The crossing where the Duke of Cambridge has his own space (My answer is a bit of a stretch) 51 Apologetic door openers
would be most welcome.
If anyone would like an extra clue for any of the others please let me know, bearing in mind that I cannot guarantee my answers are correct.

I need help with 43, 46, 48, 54, 57, 66 and 67. I'm unsure about 53, 56 and 73.
As for 42, in the answer I have the first syllable of the station name matches the short name of the current duke, and "crossing" relates to the last word of the station name.

OK
43 The person who prepares trouser legs for shortening : Does the function dressmakers do before cutting or stitching 46 Is Israel’s first female Prime-Minister covered in limes? : Finchley Central is 2/6d from here on the Northern Line. 54 Marital head covering for a ‘Friend’ : This is one on my dubious list : Near Art Deco Hoover Factory 57 Blonde cut-off branch : Just(ice) prune 66 A poorly behaved and heavy youth : Uncouth and thuggish say, joins Hundred
67 A hole dug by the edge of the sea : A closed station on an ex-line (Also, I realised that I have the same answer for 48)
These are obviously the tricky ones as they (along with 54, above) are the ones I'm least confident of:
53 Just how much money does a Die Hard actor have? : Bruce abbreviated with shortened Latin money -stuff 56 Camouflaged fence material : Trunk made to look like leaves 73 If the crossing had been afflicted by the first plague : Station on river coloured by plague
Thanks for the extra clue for 42, I get that now.

Hmm, I still don't get 43, 57 or 66. (nor 51 or 63, but I guess you don't have them either) I can't match your clue for 53 with the answer I have (a destination for some Jubilee line trains), I agree with you about 56. I had a different answer to you for 73, but I'm not confident either are correct.

I had a different answer to you for 73, but I'm not confident either are correct. 51 is the one I don't have. The only thing I can think of is All Saints as it's one of the few station names that ends in a plural (I don't think it's Kew Gardens which is, anyway, used elsewhere). Saints might open the doors to the kingdom of heaven but I don't know why they would be apologetic. Extremely weak and I'not really considering it a possibility. 63 Try: place leg joint over Thames 43: To use your bank card, 'n Her Majesty on pillar boxes 57: All the fun of this with a shortened gangling run 66: Applaud joint of pig that is now well - as muck Can I have a clue for your answer to 73, please? As to 53, I may as well give the answer I got as it's not that solid. It is on the Jubilee Line, but not AFAIA a destination (for trains). Willesden Green : Willis -> Willes, den is short for denario which is Italian for money, and Green -> Green Stuff, which can be money. Again, a bit weak.

66: Applaud joint of pig that is now well - as muck That's what I have for 65 For 51 I was thinking one of the Quay(s) stations, but I can't fit Surrey, South or Heron to "apologetic"

For 73 the first plague was a certain colour of death, but the only crossing I can link that to isn't in the station name. For 53 we have the same station but different logic: "Just how much money does a Die Hard actor have?" = (Bruce) Willis + Green with envy. I couldn't fit the "den" in there so well but I was wondering about hiding, and your money makes probably more sense.

I think it's not that the name does not lexicographically (is that even a word?) include 'crossing', the station itself is a crossing. Think: Tate Modern -> Founder's Arms -> I still thinks mine's a bit clunky - if it is the answer they could have come up with a much better clue. e.g. "Die Hard actor's (say) lair the colour of old money". If only we could get the apologetic door openers. Anyone?

Exactly what I have, except 66 -> Loughton I can't see 12 being anything other than 'Victoria' as it ("we are not amused"*) is one of the things she's most famous for. * Some say this is actually a misquote. Disraeli was visiting and could not find anywhere to park his carriage. He nervously asked her majesty if he could park inside the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Her reply was: "Mr Disraeli, we are not a mews". Now, we just need the apologetic door openers.

Now, we just need the apologetic door openers. In my head I was thinking hinges, handles, doorknobs. I have just had a flash of possible inspiration. How about Sorry Keys. It could sound like Surrey Quays? Or it could just be my strange sense of the absurd.

A big thank you to gantshill (A billion formic acid squirters beside the grand old duke of York's marching ground) for the answer to the dratted door openers. And thanks to londonstuff (Capital! add short turkey trimmings.) for providing the questions. And my thanks to Chris M (An abbreviated chapter is a quick million) for help with the clue to 42.
Here's Chris's list with the last two answers added in.
I've removed the question mark from "12 not amused" because I think that pretty sure to be correct, but left the others in place.
1. King's Cross 2. Waterloo 3. Queensbury 4. Elephant & Castle 5. Oxford Circus 6. Highgate 7. Warren Street 8. Oval 9. Barking 10. High Barnet 11. Liverpool Street 12. Victoria? 13. Stockwell 14. Angel 15. Hornchurch 16. Park Royal 17. Tottenham Court Road 18. Mansion House 19. Royal Oak 20. Holland Park 21. Whitechapel 22. Boston Manor 23. Knightsbridge 24. Marble Arch 25. Seven Sisters 26. Chalk Farm 27. Eastcote [took some thinking] 28. Mile End 29. White City 30. Leicester Square 31. Leytonstone 32. Hyde Park Corner 33. Edgware 34. Hanger Lane 35. Highbury 36. Tooting Broadway 37. Woodside Park 38. Brixton 39. Shepherd's Bush 40. Clapham North 41. Ravenscourt Park 42. Willesden Junction 43. Pinner 44. Maida Vale 45. Burnt Oak 46. Golders Green 47. Bellsize Park 48. Shoreditch? 49. Barbican 50. Turnham Green 51. Surrey Quays 52. Roding Valley 53. Willesden Green? 54. Perivale? 55. Hatton Cross 56. Wood Green? 57. Fairlop 58. Canada Water 59. Queensway 60. Hendon Central 61. Croxley 62. Totteridge & Whetstone 63. Putney Bridge 64. Kenton 65. Clapham Common 66. Loughton 67. Shoreditch? 68. East India 69. Mudchute 70. Devons Road 71. Prince Regent 72. Kew Gardens 73. Greenford? Blackfriars? 74. Lambeth North 75. Ruislip
I'm pretty sure Shoreditch is correct, but it's odd that it appears twice. Also, a ditch is not really a hole!

Yes, checking my list that's what I had. I remember jokingly thinking 'gooners' first, then realising there actually was something quite similar.
Going to do a proper side by side check, now.
ETA: Turns out I didn't check my list against Chris's very well.
Apart from the above, for 'Sounds like a great place for a tea party, I had 'Baker Street'; 'Boston Manor' is obviously much better.

Could number 53 be Rickmansworth as Alan Rickman was a Die Hard actor as well. Very good thinking, that fits a lot better than Willesden Green. How about Pitsea for number 67? Other than it having never been on the Underground or DLR that's quite good, but is the sea "by the edge of the sea"?

Now I think we only have three two questionable entries:
54. Perivale?
56. Wood Green?
73. Greenford? Blackfriars?
Together with the anomaly that two clues seem to share the same answer - one that is a near perfect, the only fly in the ointment being that a hole is not a ditch.
54 is very weak, my thinking being that 'peri' could imply a 'friend' that was on the peripheral of your group. I'm certainly not convinced.
56 Wood is a fencing material and green is a good camouflage colour. It's a bit wishy-washy but it does fit
73 Thanks to norbitonflyer for a much better solution : Redbridge
Here is the up to date list (I've removed the question marks from the Shoreditch answers pro tem).
1. King's Cross 2. Waterloo 3. Queensbury 4. Elephant & Castle 5. Oxford Circus 6. Highgate 7. Warren Street 8. Oval 9. Barking 10. High Barnet 11. Liverpool Street 12. Victoria 13. Stockwell 14.
