Location B: Chalfont & Latimer - south end of south bound [Chris M] (click for a larger version) The link has nothing to do with station equipment.

Is A Reading? Not somewhere you'd normally think of as a "city of lights"!

I can see a link between three of them - Reading, Cheshunt and Chalfont & Latimer all have terminus bay platforms, but Watford High St. does not. If that`s the link, did Watford previously have one ( for the Rickmansworth branch, or Croxley sheds) and so is the odd one out as it no longer exists ?

That’s not the answer we’re looking for this time.

Is it something to do with fare zones? All are outside the original 1-6 rings, with Cheshunt, Watford High St and Chalfont & Latimer in zone 8 - leaving Reading as the odd one out as "special fares apply"?

Link and odd one out: These locations are all in Zone 8 except Reading which is outside the zones.
