Whole line was suspended this morning, been running under severe delays since midnight ish (because of the RMT strikes)? It says 'Central Line: Severe delays due to a signal failure and train cancellations', where about's is this signal failure?

Glad I stayed at home especially in 84F temperatures- why does the Epping line always get saddled with an inferior shuttle service in these circumstances?

There might be two reasons why Hainault - Ealing is the maintained service with the others as shuttles. Firstly it is the service with the highest demand. Not knowing the Central well I assume Ealing has a higher demand than the Ruislip branch and perhaps this is true of Hainault over Epping.
The other reason might be operationally. Leytonstone is a very flexible station but it is easier to reverse the Epping service in the middle platform rather than the Hainault service which need to use the siding/loop it would seem.
Thoughts welcome.

I wondered if the shuttle service from Epping - Leytonstone was because of a lack of trains, so at least being able to provide a relatively consistent (but limited) service on that section? The service frequency on the Epping branch east of Leytonstone would otherwise be too diluated if the few trains on that branch had to travel all the way to West Ruislip and back?
At Stratford this evening going eastbound (around 8.45pm ish) there was:
1. Hainault via Newbury Park 1 min
2. Hainault via Newbury Park 20 min
So the Hainault - Ealing Broadway service appeared to be struggling a bit as well!
EDIT - my logic is flawed, since I forgot that there were also 4 trains running West Ruislip - North Action, so potentially 8 trains would be running between Epping - West Ruislip (not 4) if it was a through service. But I assume that splitting it into 4 train shuttles still gives a better consistency/frequency vs a through service with 8 trains?

Someone on here doubtless has the actual figures, but I'd have thought Snaresbrook to Epping inclusive has **higher** usage than Wanstead to Hainault...

I did not wait long for my train but was surprised to hear a PA announcement about 'trains now serving all destinations'.
On arrival at Leytonstone there was an Epping train at platform 2 with a crowd of people on my platform intent on boarding the train I was on.
The Epping train had a green signal and I had my camcorder in my hand* - I was hoping to film the Epping train departing eastbound from a train that was departing westbound, but alas the Epping train started moving about 5 seconds after the train I was on and by then I was so far along the platform that the platform buildings blocked my view.
*I was cleaning the lens at the time.

Unless these messages are accompanied by announcements, or a scrolling, stating "change at Leytonstone for the Epping shuttle"/"change at North Acton for W Ruislip", they are highly misleading.

Emergency Local Control Panels [ELCP] is use ? Manned by station supervisors [or other qualified staff] AIUI. Push button "one control switch" panels at stations with junctions / points / crossovers / etc. 16? of them I think, some time since I knew, roughly the same as the number of ATS LSC [local site computers] but not necessarily in a direct relationship. I'm not saying this is what they are doing, but is a scenario that fits. Not sure to what extent, if any, it is still done, but ISTR the relevant qualified staff at each site used to routinely take ELCP control on Sundays mornings for an hour or so to retain competence. Something like that anyway. EDIT: ooops, sorry, done it again, not reading whole thread before posting, someone else suggested the same thing already. |

The communications of the potential closure today was a bit messy.
The first heard about it was from Greater Anglia in a Tweet (nothing on TfL website). When questioned about whether or not the Tweet was a mistake, the Greater Anglia person replied "afraid not - this is what we've been told by their control room".
TfL seemed to manage to make themselves look even worse by the drip feed of Tweets from various sources, in advance of anything official from TfL. And then the whole thing was reversed! The e-mail that I received from TfL came after I had seen the tweets.
I would have valued a banner on the TfL website, stating "potential disruption on the central line this evening" linking to a page explaining a shortage of staff caused by sickness, but stating that "we are doing our best to find a solution, and we will keep you updated. Check back here for further updates. In the meantime, please plan an alternative to the central line from 5.30pm onwards".
