I noticed whilst travelling home yesterday evening after 10pm that both South Ruislip and Perivale stations were both closed “due to no availability of station staff” …
Given that both of these stations are not sub-surface {what used to be called Section 12}, and I have used South Ruislip before when completely unstaffed before- why were they closed?

It's worth remembering that while these stations are not S.12, they still require locking up at the close of traffic. It's possible that the roving Customer Service Manager for the group was not available.
Snaresbrook has closed a couple of times recently for similar reasons.

Hornchurch and East Acton were both closed Friday 12 August evening until close, for same reason.

Expect a lot more of this; if there is no night coverage stations should be locked up for numerous reasons. If there is no cover to close the station at the end of traffic (if it is non S12) then it will be locked up when the last competent member of staff books off duty.
The crux of the current LUL dispute is frankly that there are not enough staff as it is, and management want to cut yet more roles.

This is due partly to the night shift staff at neighbouring stations refusing to go and lock up stations at close of traffic. You're leaving your own station and then you’re walking into a neighbouring station on your own, with no place of safety and no idea what you’re going to encounter. You then have to go back and open it up. Some Staff just don’t feel safe or comfortable doing it.
The company provide you with a taxi to take you there and bring you back to your own station. The RMT rightly say that staff shouldn’t be doing it, as there is no risk assessment in place. As Jack says, these closures at 2230-2300 will only increase in the future, especially as staff goodwill is low or non existent at the minute.

I appreciate there is a difference entering a station as staff or passenger, but one might also say a passenger entering an unstaffed station is at some similar risk about what they might encounter...

To an extent yes. However as the member of staff who is coming to lock up and secure the station, all the trains will have gone. You therefore have the unenviable task of telling someone/ a group that they potentially can’t get home. These stations are in the suburbs, the last buses may have gone, and they may have no means of paying for a taxi. If that isn’t bad enough, some may have had a drink, others drugs, others with mental health issues. On the odd occasion, all three. As staff you’re far more likelier to get conflict than a fellow passenger. Like I say, you’re on your own, with no place of safety.

Over the past few months and especially during covid a lot of stations seemed to have closed due to non availability of staff. This evening both Upton Park and Plaistow was closed. It was strange that the train stopped in them then moved off. On the Central when this used to happen, they drove through the station around 10mph. I think this used to happen on one of the other District stations, think it was Mansion House some years ago.
