I was working on the tender wagon for the Sentinel. If there is enough interest I’ll try and get it finished and get it produced.

This seems to me to be one of the less interesting locos from this imaginative company. Thames-side industrial lines back in the 1960s had a fascinating collection of Sentinel non-conventional locos amongst many others. You can Google images of 'Sentinel loco' to get some idea of the variety. They also made interesting heavy road vehicles, where they even persevered with steam long after others.

I have to agree. Perhaps the LT-related market is large enough to influence the decision.

I have to agree. Perhaps the LT-related market is large enough to influence the decision. Maybe, but then again this is a rarely-seen (and hence perhaps 'little known') item on LU metals. However, just as LU liveried Classes 66 and 20 diesel locos are often seen on the mainline network and at steam-era railway 'living museums' so perhaps modellers will be interested in one of these too ... for use on a non-LU themed layout. My modelling interest is primarily electric and this is not something that I had ever considered buying.

I don't believe the Sentinels ever worked on LU without the wagon attached as, on their own, they were too short to reliably operate some track circuits. Does anyone know if the match wagon is also to be produced by Hornby?

Does anyone know if the match wagon is also to be produced by Hornby? Possibly they worked briefly without a tender before discovering the track circuit issue ?

Possibly, but I would think more likely that with the loco wheelbase a known figure it simply didn't meet the known minimum figure for the Signal Engineer's track circuits and so the wagon had to be procured at the same time.

One could also suggest if the minimum value was known, why did they buy them - and not something else with an acceptable wheelbase. Sentinel wheelbase is (assuming web sources are correct) 9 ft 8 in, a 57xx pannier tank 15 ft 6 in; but a Class 08 is 11 ft 6in, less than 2 ft longer then a Sentinel. I don't recall ever reading 08s had track operating problems when they used to trundle along to Smithfield from Paddington. I'd put money on Sentinel track operating wasn't thought about until they tried one out. They didn't really need the whole DL+DT wheelbase (whatever that is) to fix it if 11'6'' was ok and 9'8'' not - it's a sledge hammer to crack a nut. The axle load issue also arose after they entered service. That too came after the things started to be used. Perhaps the vendor made them an offer they could not refuse down the pub one Friday afternoon ?

The tender wagon was made from surplus Q stock bogies as the final withdrawal of the fleet was being completed around this time.
I initially thought the bogies used where ex Q38 bogies but they appear to be K2 bogies now.

Q stock cars withdrawn. Remember the Sentinels were purchased at the same time the last Q stock was withdrawn.

All three were purchased second hand (*refurbished by the manufacturer) as the ex GWR panniers were worn out. *Hence the green livery. a standard Sentinel colour.

I’ve stopped working on it now. A 3D kit has been announced by CDC design (Charlie Connor) so I’m not going to bother.
