know this has probably been shown before but was browsing local.live.com/ and came accross northfields depot. you don't appreciate as you go past on the train just how massive these depots are. local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=51.497345~-0.322428&style=h&lvl=17&scene=3995886moderators - i trust this does not breach any copyright regulations as unlike google earth this site is free - Windows Live Local is a free online local search and mapping service. - however if at all concerned please remove this thread

Northfields is tiny compared to the likes of Neasden and Ruislip, although it's quite a hefty walk from one end of the site to the other!!

....and a large depot is somewhat different from a small control centre, or an access point (the last 2 things off Google Earth we banned).

I've been looking at the area of Kent, and there's no Tunnel Rail Link! So, that puts it at least TEN YEARS out. ALso, I noticed the areas you bleddy wanna see close up, you cant get a low enough profile. So you just see it like a blurr.

Nothing is wrong with Brighton (at least not that I know, I've not been there since I was a toddler), I was more thinking along the lines of what the beech is famous for - i.e. the same as Studland beach.

The Windows Live Local view of my town clearly predates the town centre redevelopment begun in 1999.
The Google earth view is so distant it's useless!

interesting to see comments re the merits of the two sites (google earth and the windows one) as far as my area is concerned (motherwell) on google it is unviewable simply an out of focus mass of land. on the windows one it is probably around 4 years ago though other surrounding areas are as recent as last year. i suppose these sites are updated as and when new views are available. final point - on the windows site greenwich looks around 1998/99 as the dome looks to be under construction.

Google maps is in date, and around london its relatively detailed I thought. Thats not the same thing as google earth is it? Hang about, do you have to download Google earth?

Google Earth is a program you must download.
Google Maps has the same data as Google Earth but can be run from your favourite web browser.
Edit: as for dates it depends on the area. My area was photographed in detail in 2001, others before or after that date.

Just follow the tracks southwest beyond Boston Manor and you can see the close headways maintained on the Piccadilly Line – less than a train length by the looks of it [now seriously] Shows the wonder of satellite sweeps and/or photo compositing. On Google Earth the same aeroplane can be seen three times when landing eastbound on Heathrow's northern runway – although it looks like hairy formation flying[/now seriously]

As for the images being out of date on Windows Live Local, it's most likely because the images were originally part of the Millennium Map project. Therefore, assuming they started a little early around 1999-2001 is probably about accurate in most cases. The Birds Eye View mode is much more recent though.
Not sure about Google Earth/Maps re. image source.
