Not a good advert for the system. As for the [lack of] security at CFS, its very worrying.

I seriously hope LU get rid of the eyesores soon. Perhaps they're doing a useful job? If the local intelligensia have got the 83s to wreck and repaint to their heart's content then perhaps they'll leave the service fleet and infrastructure alone?

Maybe LU should put in a bit more effort to stop vandals getting into Cockfosters Depot in the first place. LU is trying to maintain a good corporate image, having the 83s in this condition around the system isn't going to help that image! They should just all be removed and scrapped.

Maybe LU should put in a bit more effort to stop vandals getting into Cockfosters Depot in the first place. The same can be said for all depots and sidings but how do you suggest they do that? Electrifying the fence with traction current would probably be deemed illegal by the police, HSE etc. Which should have happened a long time ago. I suspect that with the arrival of PPP no one wants to take responsibility for them and, as long as they're not taking up space wanted for something else, no one wants to spend the money on disposing of them.

Being as that they've laid dormant for so long. It wouldn't surprise me if the Traction Motors had actually seized...

Its up to Tube Lines not LUL what happends to 1983 Stock, if you look on the Tube Lines website you can see that 6 cars have been removed from Uxbridge sidings recently and been put to good use.

I don't know how easy it is to crane the 83TS out of Cockfosters and South Harrow sidings. Maybe they could be shunted to somewhere more appropriate for removal, unless the axles have seized as well.

Well the ones at Uxbridge sidings were remove by crane, if it can be done at one place, it can be done at another.

Why can't they refurb the 83TS?

Money! (a lot of ;D) The biggest problem with the 83ts is their single leaf door configuration - the middle ones would need to be altered to double door. Because they've sat around for so long all the glass would need replacing and, I suspect that all the wiring / motors / etc would need replacing. It's just too much hassle for the too few units that remain.

There is also no use for the 83s at present.

83TS was considered for upgrading for the Jubilee Line extension. It would have meant rebuilding the bodies with double doors and replacing most of the traction and auxiliary kit. They would also have needed new bogies.
It was costed and found to be only 10% less than a completely new fleet. At estimate stage this is "in the noise" so there were no benefits and a lot of risks. Better to dump them, which they did.

What about uses such as tunnel cleaning, weedkilling etc? OK now it might not be cost effective, but I think I heard the tunnel cleaning train had packed in a few years ago - why not convert the 83ts into replacements?

I gather from today's RAIL mag that six ex-Uxbridge have gone to Shoreditch to become start-up business units.

I think the original idea was completely refurb them to 73 stock but wouldhave been very expensive. Urban myth has it the one in South Harrow is rust-welded to the rails.
