Reports reach me, that after the Brazil Vs Argentina friendly at Ashburton Grove, there was next to no queueing to get away on the tube.
Is it finally the case that The Picc is going to run at capacity on matchdays again, as they always used to?

Perhaps the match wasn't watched by a capacity crowd. Also, isn't the new ground covered by more stations than the old one?

The capacity is 60,420 the crowd on Sunday was just over
59,000. It shouldn 't be forgotten that pre - 1993 before
Highbury was made all-seater the capacity was just below
60,000 so the local transport infrastructure should be able to
cope. In an ideal world the works would have been carried
out at Holloway Rd and Drayton Park which would
considerably
ease the pressure on Arsenal station .
As a sideline TFL have announced
that Piccadilly line trains will non -stop Kings Cross this
weekend and a number of others when a game is taking
place at the Emirates stadium . This is going to put a lot
of strain on the Victoria line.

The Victoria already carries a lot of the football traffic as it is. My reasons for using The Picc was always Arsenal tube, as it was right there for The North Bank, where I used to stand.
Highbury was a 60,000 ground before all seaters were introduced, and back then we had little or no trouble getting on the tube. The segregation worked well, and trains ran often enough to disperse the crowd quickly. When the capacity was cut to 38,000 seems to be when the problems started. Maybe they reduced the amount of trains running, I don't know.
From a personal point of view, I see that trains running non-stop from Finsbury Park or Arsenal direct to KX would ease the pressure rather than increase it. Just as long as Northbound trains after the match don't run non-stop to Cockfosters!

Yesterday just to help the problems caused by the Picc
non-stopping KX the Vic went out of action with defective
train radios. This happened just in time for the final whistle
and 60 ,000 fans heading for home !

I can't say that I have heard of any complaints about yesterday as yet. A couple of people I spoke to who attended didn't mention anything out of the ordinary, and both used The Picc from Arsenal.

2 years ago I was involved in the Holloway Road upgrade project. The whole idea was that Emirates stadium was much closer to Holloway road than any other station. We felt that this would cause a 2-lift + spirals stairs station to be overrun and become inoperable. My main fear was that we could not people get off the platforms pre-match as quick as the trains could drop them off, and post match, we thought that most trains would be filled up at Arsenal SB so that they'd be mostly full on arrival at Holloway Road.
I've left now and no longer in touch, what's happening at Holloway road on match days?

There were loads of problems before and after the game yesterday . The Picc line
management who don 't deal with the public on a daily basis assume they are
intelligent and rational beings . They do not listen to announcements , read posters or
check on the staus of their journey via the internet or ceefax . This meant thousands
of people turning up at KX expecting to travel on the Picc . The Vic platform at KX
was dangerously overcrowded . The dunderheads who scheduled this engineering work
should be locked up in their ivory tower . I have noticed that about 2/3 of the future
dates coincide with Emirates match days . I simply cannot believe that the weekends
without games could not have been utilised instead. The closure of the Vic caused
massive queues at both Arsenal and Finsbury Park . Holloway Rd station is normally
closed for exit for about 1 hour prior to the game and for entrance 1 hour after the
game .

So they close it! Bit of a cop-out is it not?
What really irked me is that some nameless drongo in Marketing and Planning (as it was) accepted Arsenal's transport plan which stated all sorts of junk about how very few people will use HOR station. Once the deal was done, we operator types were invited in to help design some changes to the station - as long as we didn't spent more than a fiver. We couldn't even afford to finish the drawings let alone build anything. The real sickener was that the local council would not accept the plan unless the project paid for a brand new refuse processing facility - which they got - at Arsenal's expense. What did LUL get? Sweet FA is the answer. Yet nobody is held accountable for it. In the end, HOR is still a dump and it has to be closed when there's a footy match. Brilliant!
Bitter? Me?
