Is there a chance that South Harrow traincrew depot will reopen, as Hammersmith and Loughton have?

With all the stories I've heard about the District serving Uxbridge, another depot in this part of the world might not be a bad idea.

Indeed. The loss of Triangle and Farringdon Sidings would make the presence of South Harrow Sidings especially useful to the SSL, which would be able to make good use of the space. After all, as COLIN once said about Barking, number of trains stabled != number of drivers rostered Besides, our esteemed leader would probably be first in line to sign up ;D ;D ;D

I haven't been to/looked at pics of South Harrow sidings for ages, how many sidings are there? I know the tea points are still in existance on the platforms there.

There are six sidings. Two are occupied with gently rotting 1983TS. All of them should be of sufficient length to stable 7-car S Stock.

Interesting. I wonder how many Picc trains currently stable in Uxbridge sidings? Am I right in thinking it's around three?

I believe that only one train stables there at the moment.

Hmmm...interesting. Looking in an old ELL thread, I see that with 5 daytime runners, 1 interpeak stabler and a depot transfer trip, the ELL rota comprised of 44 drivers doing 31 M - F duties. With our 7 stablers and 1 Uxbridge stabler, and a longer line to play with, I can see this depot having around 50 - 60 drivers, if used in the grain of this thread. Not to mention if any additional stabling space was built anywhere else.

Well, Barking DR has 60 drivers at the moment, and they only stable one train. Given that the only current District Line depots are Acton, Earl's Court, Barking and Upminster, if the District does begin running to Uxbridge then having a DR traincrew depot at South Harrow would be very useful indeed.
For that matter, reopening the traincrew depot at Uxbridge for Met line drivers would be useful as well.

Well, Barking DR has 60 drivers at the moment, and they only stable one train That's a very good point.....if SH opened for DR extension work, it could indeed have quite a few people based there. Also if Uxbridge was to re - open, with the new S stock rolling stock knowledge wouldn't be a problem, with maybe Uxbridge Met drivers covering District workings out of Uxbridge sidings as far as Rayners Lane (rather like Hammersmith stablers at the moment, with DR drivers picking up at Edgware Road). Indeed, with a generic rolling stock the possibilities are endless....................... (Alex is looking too much into thread now ;D ;D)

TBH I think the prevailing thought after the introduction of the S stock is to continue the line segregation; I don't think there are plans to make every single SSL driver fully road trained for the entire SSL network.
I could certainly see some advantages in re-amalgamating the C&H and Met crews, though - relieving the boredom of going round the Circle all the time by allowing drivers to run services down the Met Main and back, as was done pre-Company Plan, could be very useful.

Well....it could all happen. I think myself it would be a good thing to mix things up again, with the main problem at the moment being stock knowledge. I remember being told that not too many years ago DR Parsons Green drivers (Sundays only) used to drive Circles, along with their Met Main counterparts. I agree with the point that more varied work would make the job more interesting - however, some drivers would disagree. I know a good amount of drivers at ECT like locals (EDG - WIM), for the reason that "They're never far from home". If a signal failure happens miles away they can get back to their home depot, instead of being stranded at UPM or somewhere else a long way out.

There's a big difference between "then" & "now". We now have to be assessed on our road knowledge every 12 months, with a mini refresher every 6 months (so we are assessed every six months).
Having this cover the entire SSL just wouldn't be practical.
That said, final plans have yet to be finalised with regard to service provision once the S stock is in place - though a very firm rumour is that 7 car S stocks will stable at Neasden..........and not forgetting the Met is reputedly coming back to Barking.
We'll have to wait & see............

Indeed Colin, forgot about the Barking issue. This thread has just bought home to me how much of a 'new world' the SSL will be with the S stock trains - I'm not sure if I'm ready for all this yet - when's the first trains being delivered - 2009?

Don't say that in public if you're applying for t/op ;D Oh dear..done it again......... ;D ;D ;D The new era of the S stock certainly will be different, and I think TOK has started a very good subject. With route alterations, train crewing and stabling changes all at stake I'd rather have an idea sooner rather than later - as some of you know I haven't posted that much in recent months and have some catching up to do
