Does TfL still plan on replacing the narrow island platforms at Clapham North and Clapham Common with Angel-style widened platforms on the northbound and new platforms on the southbound?

Those platforms are very narrow - I went down there for the first time the other day - are there many other stations like that?

'The Clapham's' !! ...........Sounds like a new soap opera. All we need now is 'The Ruislips' and we'll be able to get rid of Deadenders.

It was always said that the underground was a family business. I never realised they were talking about the stations! ;D Apart from those that Q8 mentions there's the Leytons, the Hams (West, East and their son Dagen), the Greens, the Actons, the Gates, the Hounslows and not far from them the Heathrows who have another on the way.

.... the Heathrows who have another on the way. Although few expect them to be any more creative when naming their newest than they were for the last addition to the family!

Those platforms are very narrow - I went down there for the first time the other day - are there many other stations like that? No, they're the last two. Clapham Common would be easy to do, because the tunnel is straight - just fill in the southbound platform track, build step-plates on the southbound in both directions and divert the southbound line into a new platform tunnel. You could even pull a Euston and install a facing crossover from the northbound line to the old southbound line - thus allowing trains to run directly into the n/b platform and reverse north if needed.

There used to be a couple of places elsewhere on other lines. that that driver's perk applied too. But not so direct.

What is the driver's perk? +1. Knowing this forum it undoubtedly has something to do with what antics the passengers were up to

Exactly the same perk that bus conductors used to get. ;D

Thanks Q8- as an ex-(student) conductor I now see what you're on about. Mind you, it was better in the 60s wasn't it?

I'm confused - I got off on the southbound and scoured the platforms but still don't get it. Feeling left out now - might go and cry in the corner.

I don't know either (I've never been south of Waterloo on the Northern Line), but I can guess. From other comments here, I think you might need to get yourself a cabride to see it

Stand at the bottom of the stairs and look up.

If you had a decent guard, he would wait in the platform for a bit longer than advertised to give the driver a chance to partake in a bit of ornothology. ;D
Must admit, it took longer than I expected for these "perks" to be mentioned. Thought it would have been mentioned days ago. ;D

But in which direction?
LT wisely chose to widen the southbound platform at Angel, thus allowing massive throngs of people to stand there waiting for trains to Bank and London Bridge; a similar thing was done at Euston, but for different reasons.
At the Claphams, everyone wants to go north, so will they divert the southbound line instead?

What a pleasure it is to join this Forum. Now when i saw the two Claphams, i knew i had to join.
So - tell us more about this plan to have another platform at Clapham Common/North markextube. I know it was thought about when they re-did Angel (same type of station) - but am wondering what or if there are concrete plans to expand capacity at Clapham. Clapham C and N have to close because of the platform congestion; they need rebuilding at least as much as Camden Town (you must understand that in the eyes of transport planners, South London is a place they fly over on their way to Heathrow).
Well there is a parallel platform at Clapham North southbound beyond the grills (the abortive proposed Northern Express route), so the track could be built through there to form another parallel platform at Clapham Commom. I think the two platforms should be given to the Southbound service - with one important provision: Tube trains should have the opportunity of terminating at Clapham Common, then going via sidings to return to the Northbound platform to mop up passengers. Such a system exists at Tooting Broadway - and as Clapham Common is capacity bottlenecked, arguably Clapham Common should get a similar system. After all, Clapham Common was a terminus for 26 years!
