I've mostly finished preparing September's quiz, but I'm running out of photos for the quiz that are taken by people other than me. I have plenty of mine, but I want the variety that multiple photographers brings. Pictures can be from today or as long ago as you like, although previously unpublished ones are preferable. In terms of location, all of the following are 'on topic' for the quiz - - All current Underground, Overground and DLR lines, depots and stations, including when operated by a predecessor organisation (e.g. London Transport, Yerkes Group, British Rail, Silverlink, etc)
- Disused Underground and DLR lines and stations (e.g. Aldwych, Epping-Ongar)
- London Underground and DLR stock (past, present and future) in places other than London Underground/the DLR (e.g preserved railways, the Isle of Wight, museums, historic photos of LU trains at stations no longer served by LU, etc)
- the London Transport Museum and LT Museum Depot
- mock-ups of LU/DLR/Overground stations in other locations (e.g. museums, film sets, etc)
- New Underground/Overground/DLR/Crossrail lines and stations, once construction has started. This includes additional platforms/sections/etc of existing stations, but unless they are covered by another 'rule' already, stations that are to be taken over or used without any major alterations are not allowed until the service starts.
- At stations served by LU/LO/DLR and (other) National Rail services where there no or very little separation between the parts of the station, the entire station is 'on topic'.
- At the following shared stations, the entire station is on topic but as there is a bit more separation, photos should generally be of or from the LU/DLR/LO parts, or common parts of the station (bridges/subways/passages that can be used to access the LU/DLR/LO parts, ticket halls, exteriors, and such like)
- Barbican
- Barking
- Bushey
- Clapham Junction
- East Putney
- Euston (suburban)
- Farringdon
- Greenford
- Greenwich
- Harrow and Wealdstone
- Harrow on the Hill
- Moorgate
- Paddington (suburban)
- Richmond
- South Ruislip
- Stratford
- Upminster
- Watford Junction
- Wembley Central
- West Ham
- West Ruislip
- Wimbledon
- Entrances, signs and passages, etc leading to the Underground/DLR/Overground at all other shared stations are 'on topic' (eg.
Due to the number of photos I've already got of the following locations (15 or more in all cases, over 40 for one station!), I'd prefer not to get (m)any more at the present time - - Acton Central
- Arnos Grove
- Baker Street
- Becontree
- Chigwell
- Chorleywood
- Earl's Court
- Farringdon
- Gants Hill
- Golders Green
- Gospel Oak
- Hampstead
- Kilburn Park
- Latimer Road
- London City Airport
- Maida Vale
- Shepherd's Bush Central Line
- Watford (Met)
- Willesden Junction
Take a look at past questions to see what works well and what doesn't. The idea is to make it guessable but not too easy, although this is incredibly difficult to predict so don't worry too much. Don't worry about photo quality, camera phone pictures are usually fine. Also I'd like backgrounds - for these larger really is better and picture quality matters more. Look at past photos to see what can be done, but generally ones that work well often have lots of foreground. Also ones taken at oblique angles and with lots of perspective (as this is commonly feature of photos of railway stations, especially platforms). Smaller photos are usable as insets, for these clear shapes, strong composition help. Photos taken looking straight on are useful here. Again look at past quizzes to see how I've used them in the past. Just send me the photos by email, the larger the resolution the better (640x480 is about the minimum size for quiz and inset pictures, background pictures preferably should be 1024x768 or greater). Don't forget to make it clear where the photos are of (I'm actually not very good at working out which station photos are of!) and anything else you think worth noting (about 90% of the time I won't know anything other than what you tell me). If it isn't clear from your email, make sure you tell me what your username here is. If you have ideas for a link or odd-one-out question including your picture(s), or if you have a bonus question to got with the pictures, let me know and I'll probably use it. If there is a link between your picture and a specific date, let me know and I'll try and use it on that day (although I can't guarantee it, the more notice you give me the more likely it is). In all cases I will credit you by your username unless you explicitly tell me you want something different (I will respect this, including not crediting you at all if you want). I will probably not acknowledge your email until I sort the pictures into my repository of future questions, which may not be until towards the end of a month (although it could be much sooner). Do feel free to check by email or PM if you want though. Also I should note that I'll happily receive photos at any time, not just at the moment. Sorry to make this sound so complicated - it really isn't! Chris

Following a request to clarify, I've decided that the Stratford-North Woolwich section of the North London Line is on topic for the quiz.

As I am running out of photos for the quiz that are not mine, now is a good time to send in your photos. Doubly so if you have any of the stations below, which are my current most wanted. The list in the previous post gives a fuller list if you have more time to read it.
Amersham, Bounds Green, Brent Cross, Carpender's Park, Chesham, Colindale, Dalston Kingsland, Devons Road, Gallions Reach, Goodge Street, Grange Hill, Hounslow Central, Hounslow East, Limehouse, Royal Albert, Shadwell, South Acton, South Kenton, South Tottenham, Sudbury Hill, Wood Green, Upney and Upper Holloway.

Thank you to the two members who responded, I now have a photograph sourced. Any other photos you wish to send me for the quiz are as always welcome - just take a look at my posts on the 31st of January and 5th April if you need inspiration. Don't be afraid to think outside the box either - if I can't use it as a main photo it will more than likely come in handy as a backdrop or inset.

It is special request time again!
On this occasion I'm looking for someone who can photograph a specific Zone 1 station this weekend and email the photograph to me no later than Monday evening. If you fit bill and are willing to help out (and don't mind not taking part on the quiz on the day your photo appears) then send me an email or PM before 9am tomorrow.
Thank you Chris

Time to get your thinking caps on ladies and gentlemen. Day 1000 of the quiz will happen in late November, but I don't know which station or stations to use on that day. If you have any ideas then send them to me by PM, preferably before the middle of November to allow me time to source and prepare the picture(s). Unless you tell me otherwise in your PM, I will give you credit for the suggestion when the answer to the question is posted.

Various things having conspired against me this weekend, I'm now in need of photographs of two stations for the latter stages of this month.
One of the stations is in Zone 1, and the other is in Zone 2 and both are on or east of the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line. If anyone will be able to photograph either or both of them for me and email the pictures in the next 1-2 weeks then please could you send me a PM.
Thanks, Chris

I've cocked up again in my planning, and need a photograph of a specific station by Sunday evening (or Monday evening at the very latest). The station I'm after is in the north-west quadrant of the tube map and is in zones 4, 5 or 6.
If anyone is able to help me out, then please send me an email or PM for details.
Thanks, Chris

Thank you to the three members who helped me out recently. As I realised that my previous list of wants was out of date, here is the current version. Generally, I would particularly like photographs from: - locations east of zone
- Stations with "Acton" in the name (except Acton Central)
- Stations on the Goblin and DLR
- Depots
- Disused stations, including the Epping-Ongar branch
More specifically, I have between 0 and 3 photos of each of the following stations, and so they form my most wanted list: Barking, Bethnal Green, Blackfriars, Borough, Boston Manor Canary Wharf DLR, Chancery Lane, Clapham North, Cockfosters, Crouch Hill Dagenham East, Dalston Kingsland, Down Street East Acton, East Ham Fairlop Hackney Wick, Harlesden, Harringay Green Lanes, Hendon Central, Holland Park, Holloway Road, Hornchurch Island Gardens Kensal Rise, Kentish Town, Kingsbury Leicester Square Mansion House, Moor Park New-build ELL stations, NLL Woolwich Arsenal branch stations Old Street Parsons Green, Plaistow, Poplar, Putney Bridge Queensbury Ravenscourt Park, Redbridge, Royal Albert, Royal Victoria Shadwell East London Line, Shepherd's Bush Market, Shoreditch (closed), South Acton, South Ealing, South Tottenham, St John's Wood, Stamford Brook, Stations east of Epping Totteridge and Whetstone Upney Walthamstow Queens Road, West Acton, West Brompton, West Kensington, Wimbledon Park As I have 13 or more pictures of all of the following stations, I'd prefer only to receive any particularly good or very different views of these locations: Acton Central, Aldgate, Arnos Grove Baker Street, Barkingside, Brent Cross Chesham, Chigwell, Chorleywood, Colindale Earl's Court, Edgware Road (Circle) Farringdon Gloucester Road, Golders Green, Goldhawk Road Hampstead, Hanger Lane, Headstone Lane, Highbury and Islington, Hounslow West Ickenham Kilburn High Road, Kings Cross St Pancras Latimer Road, London City Airport Maida Vale North Ealing Park Royal Shepherd's Bush (Central Line) Tooting Broadway, Turnpike Lane Victoria Watford Met, Willesden Junction, Wood Lane If a station is not on either list then I'll take to photos of them but you needn't make a special journey to take photos of them just for the quiz (unless you want to!).

Rather a short notice request this time, but would anyone be able to take a photograph of a specific area of a station in East London and get it to me tomorrow or Wednesday evening? If so, send me an email or PM and I'll give you details.

For September's quiz I am in need of photos of two specific stations in Zone 2, one in west London, the other south of the river.
If you will be able to take a photograph of one or both of them, please could you send me a PM and I'll give you the locations. I need the photos by about the 8th of September ideally.
Thanks

I have another request - and this is probably the longest shot yet! I'm looking for a photograph of a specific transport feature in Manhattan! I need it before the end of the first week of September, so if you could PM me if you think you might be able to help, then please send me a PM.
Also, I've not yet received any responses to my previous request for the two zone 2 stations, so please take a look at the post above this one to see if you can help.
Thanks Chris

Standby quiz poster needed for one day only!
If anyone will be able to and prepared to post the quiz picture on Saturday morning if SE13's connection troubles are not over by then, please could you send me a PM or email before Friday lunch time and I'll give you a copy of the relevant files. Neither myself or MRFS are going to be able to cover that day.
Thanks Chris

As I might have promised at some point, here is an updated list of which stations I particularly want photos of. Category A is the most wanted, all photos welcome Category B and C stations I have a few photos of, more are welcome but photos that are a little bit different in some way are preferable Category D locations I have plenty of photos of, so please only send photos that are different or unusual somehow. Category E locations I generally have 20 or more photos of (no locations have been used more than 13 times since the quiz started in February 2007), so unless you have something truly out of the ordinary then it's not likely to be much use for a few years yet. If a location is on-topic but not in this list then it is in category A - except the following in category D: Between Cyprus and Gallions Reach Between King George V and Woolwich Arsenal Between Royal It's photo request time again! This time I'd like a photograph of a specific station on the Paris Métro. If you think you might have or be able to get such a photo by this time next month, then please send me an email or PM.
Cheers Chris

After a few recent requests, I've compiled the list of most and least desired locations for the quiz. This can be found in several formats at www.sucs.org/~cmckenna/photos/quizes/tqmisc/ I haven't got the time to put it into a table here. How desirable a photo of a location is is expressed as a category A to E, A being the most useful E the least. It's calculated based on the number of photos in stock, the type of location, the number of times that location has been used and how recently it's last use was. If a location is on-topic but not on the list then it's category A. If you aren't sure whether a location is on or off topic ask me! Anything that is identifiable but not on topic can be used as a background/inset and I'm after them as well. Also welcome are ideas for link questions, which are always based around four locations. Three formats have been used to date: a simple link between 4 locations (e.g. all having entrances above the track); one of the 4 being an odd one out (e.g. Bermondsey being the only one of the set without bay platforms) or to find the fifth member of a set or series (e.g. stations having 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 escalators). Other ideas for link formats (preferably with at least one suggested link) are welcome as well. I'm also happy to receive ideas for locations to appear on specific dates, e.g. Caledonian Road appeared on St Andrew's Day a couple of years back. This can be combined with links as well.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me photos recently. Due to a combination of internet connection trouble and university deadlines I haven't been able to sort them all out into the stock yet. I plan to do this over the next week, replying to everyone as their photos are sorted.
On a separate note, I am from now on considering Paddington as having two LU stations rather than 1 - H&C/Bishop's Road and Praed Street/other lines. This is so that the number of stations my database has matches the number LU say they have (and I'm inclined to think they might know).

They might do now but I don't think they did in the past. I was always concerned that when I spoke to the "old man" from Croxley he didn't know we existed.

Well given that everything official I've seen everywhere tallies with what I know firsthand (I've been to every staition at least once) apart from their claiming to have one more station I'm fairly sure. That single discrepancy is easily explained by Paddington, especially as I have a recollection of a discussion on here (I think it was in the context of one of the t-cup trials) saying that Paddington was separate stations for staffing purposes.
Not every staff member know every station of course, I remember a CSA at Debden being confused by a passenger mentioning Bounds Green and a ticket office staff member at South Kensington appeared only dimly aware of Pontoon Dock.
What controllers know or don't know I have no knowledge of.
When it comes to locations that are not current stations, I'm sure there are many differences between what I and they consider separate and indeed what we consider them to be, especially as I have many simply classed as being between X and Y. But then our datasets serve different purposes - they're running railways where as I'm just running a quiz and collating (lots of) statistics about it.

Right, I think that I've got the photos from everyone that sent some to me recently except Rincew1nd (I might have accidentally deleted the email as I can't find it) and BigBadDom (the uni network is not letting me download anything from Gmail, please could you try sending the pictures again to cmckenna @ sucs . org). If you haven't received an email reply from me today saying thanks for your photos, please could you send them again, cheers.

Further to discussion on Today's quiz, from now on please do not post pictures that include the station name (or other things that make it blindingly obvious, such as "Alight here for X" signs) on the quiz thread before the answer is given. The only exception to this is if it is part of a long discussion that started as text only (and even then links are preferred). This keeps it fun for everyone as long as possible. Similarly, in the early days PMs were often (but not always) sent by people who (thought they) were certain of the answer, sometimes posting on the thread that they had done so. With a larger quiz team, PMs are no longer as practical so as an experiment I have set up a shared email address - tubequiz@gmx.com - that all the quiz team (myself, Rincew1nd, CSO, SE13 and Chief stand-in MRFS) can read. You don't have to use it, especially if it's later in the day or you're not certain, but it's there as an option if you want it (posting in the thread that you've sent an email will probably be a useful prompt for us to remember to check it, at least at first!). If you are sending quiz photos, or want to contact me specifically, please continue to use my cmckenna@sucs.org address.

If anyone has any photos of the Epping-Ongar Railway (either present day or historical), particularly the stations, that are suitable for the quiz please could you email them to me. I was hoping to get there this month, but that now doesn't look likely to happen before the date I want to use one of the stations. Other photos are of course also welcome as normal. I'll update the wanted list soon, but I completely changed the way the desire category is determined and I'm still fiddling with it to get the optimum results.

I've just had it pointed out that the list of most wanted locations was very out of date, so I've uploaded it in OpenOffice Calc, MS Excel (untested) and html formats to www.sucs.org/~cmckenna/photos/quizes/tqmisc/ How desirable a photo of a location is is expressed as a category A to E, A being the most useful E the least. It's calculated based on the number of photos in stock, the type of location, the number of times that location has been used and how recently it's last use was. You will always get credit for what you send me unless you request otherwise or it is a photograph apparently taken from the cab of an in-service train (see the separate thread for the reason) when they will be credited as "anonymous".
