;D You may think I'm winding you up, but the Berlin U-Bahn actually has some stock like that, used for 'Tunnel Tours'. You pay around €30 and you get a hard hat and an hour or two railtour running around the central parts of the network, using interline connections. What's more, these run on a Friday evening during traffic hours! Can you honestly imagine LU doing that? Would be fantastic though - I'd pay for High Street Ken-Plaistow-Moorgate-West Hampstead-Charing X hauled in open wagons by a battery loco. Anyone want to suggest it to senior management...!

The drive motors are still set on sliding rails. This is for adjustment to maintain the tension in the drive chain between it and the drive sprocket.

Just to add a little more about the Berlin tunnel tours (apolgies if in the wrong place!). I can highly recommend them although they do get booked up a long time in advance.
Now that all U-Bahn lines run all-night on Fridays and Saturdays every 15 mins (except for U4) it is wonderful to see the faces of the all-night passengers waiting for their train on the platform (many of them probably well filled with alcohol) as the special train passes through - in open wagons with hard hats [wonders what "Bob the Builder Special" translates to in German!]. The train (of open wagons with tip-up seats) was hauled by a diesel loco. Tour itineraries are varied. On my trip we went from Alexanderplatz (U5) - connection to U8, north to Osloer Strasse (U8 to U9), Nauener Platz (U9 to U6), Seestrasse, Mehringdamm (U6 to U7), Hermannplatz (U7 to U8) and finishing at Alexanderplatz on line U8 at about 03.00 - all underground - but absolutely fascinating. And I was able to travel 'home' by U-Bahn.
I think the open air sections are sometimes included - must be a hoot if it is raining!

"Sonderzug Baumeister Robrecht" (very approximately!)
You lucky ...! I've tried twice for tickets for these a month or two in advance without success. I believe the BVG also allow walking tours through the tunnels?
How many hopes of LU/H&S allowing these...

Brian A60K -
The BVG indeed do walking tunnel tours. I did Uhlandstrasse to Kurfurstendamm about four years ago one Saturday morning. It was advertised to all - then free of charge - a good time was had by all, including the man taking his dog for a walk along the track, plus Dads taking wife and kids for a trip out (or was it the other way round?)!
And - here's the punch line - they shut down the service officially for the event to take place!!!!! Howzat? Wunderbar but unbelieveable. All credit to the BVG.
Watch out for special visits at "Open House" weekends.

I remember when the 1973 Stock as was, was introduced, and suddenly we could see cars on our daily commute with ceiling-mounted fans! I belive that sometimes they were actually on!

Was it Regents Part that had the longest escalator! If you meant to say "Regents Park", then it has always had lifts.

I think Angel now has longest escalator.....but only since the rebuild. I'm not sure about the longest before then....Holborn and Leicester Square are candidates as they are both enormous.

Leicester Square supposedly had the longest from my memory, but Holborn's was a fitness-inducer when I commuted to there from Hounslow West 1973-4! At my peak I used to climb steps two at a time, and ran up and down at speed without any safety issue. Idiot!
