I completely agree with Chris M; something bold and memorable must be done for the retirement of the 'A' stock; not just a light blue vinyl...

I completely agree with Chris M; something bold and memorable must be done for the retirement of the 'A' stock; not just a light blue vinyl... 'A' stock was introduced to us with a slogan that referred to its livery - 'Steam to Silver'. For this reason, I think that it would be fitting if the last unit went out in the same colour that it came in with.

LU move customers from A to B, they used to do it via 'C'.

Thats a nice idea, but I can't see a cash strapped MRSSL spending money on a stock it is about to send to the scrap yard.

they were spending some money on Sarah Sidons, so why not this?
I'm sure they could confiscate some paint stripper from the local Metroland youth!

Why not paint it silver? It was done with some of the 'R' stock. Besides, when you strip paint off aluminium you tend to get ghosting which wouldnt look that great.

I think Sarah Siddons is considered a special case, a distinction that I can't see being applied to the 'A' Stock (rightly or wrongly). You may see a farewell tour (a dead cert in my book) but thats about it, I'll get the detonators ready shall I?

Would they consider it if they weren't the ones paying? I don't know the cost of repainting a train (but the frequency with which First Great Western do it, it can't be too expensive I don't think) and I certainly don't have that kind of money in my back pocket (I wish!) but perhaps a consortium of individuals plus maybe a little from the musuem (or co-ordinated through them maybe), the EOR might put in a bob or two and Cravens Heritage Trains the same.
If it were do-able it would require some serious organisation - but I don't think the logistics would be too different to the AC Loco Group's purchase of the Class 89 loco.

I honestly don't know. Whilst I can't speak for the museum, I do know that their current policy dictates that they maintain their stock in 'as withdrawn' condition. So if you follow that policy logically I guess they would only be interested in taking a current liveried 'A' Stock (if they take one at all that is). I think the other issue is that as the upgrade picks up pace they simply may not have the time or spare staff to dedicate to something like this. I'm not saying it isn't do-able or a good idea - I just think it is unlikely if I'm honest.

CHT will probably want the first unit, 5000-6000-6001-5001, and it'll probably end up in near enough original condition eventually.
