Well this is it, manufacturers have very little reason to make their signalling products compatible with others, in fact theres far more reasons for them to keep it as propriatry as possible. The more generic something is, the greater the chance of the client getting future parts/services from someone else. If only LUL had kept their engineering division, they could have designed their own solution, and just asked others to make the necessary parts.

Would the contract still have to be put out to tender throughout the EU though with other companies allowed to bid against LULs in house engineering division?

I thought Boris' next manifesto pledge was to bring back tube trains with guards because they make the public feel safe....? Of course the guard will only be on the train for a limited number of hours when it's really busy - being OPO the rest of the time. TfL will hold a design competition and then retain the rights to whatever the competition over-ruling company designs and so it will be able to license it to other manufacturers too..... Well, it'll work for the BorisMaster won't it..... ;D ;D
